A first edition of this two volume set in the publisher's original cloth binding. Ink inscription to the front free end paper of the Treatise, which has been blotted out. The volume of text is illustrated with 5 plates and numerous in-text illustrations. The volume of illustrations is illustrated with 48 plates and 12 folding plates. Collated, complete. Edmund Sharpe (1809-1877) was an architect, architectural historian, railway engineer, and sanitary reformer, who wrote many important works on architecture. In this work he seeks to outline the development of decorative window tracery in England. In one volume is his treatise on this subject, in the other is a series of illustrations of window tracery with descriptions by Sharpe. Gold boxes were some of the most luxurious items in eighteenth century Europe, presented as gifts to friends and lovers, and by monarchs to ambassadors and courtiers.
