A souvenir brochure celebrating a 1951 Testimonial for Arthur Wellard (1902-1980), a talented cricketer who played for Somerset and England. Wellard exemplified the happy-go-lucky spirit of Somerset cricket in the 1930s. He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1936. Illustrated with 18 photographs, Bill Andrews gives an account of Wellard's career. Also contains facsimile autographs of Wellard and his Somerset colleagues. Scarce in its original illustrated hardback boards Comprised of issues 1 to 25 of Pierce Egan's Book of Sports and Mirror of Life, with twenty five illustrations. Egan provides an entertaining compendium of sports lore, with articles on horse racing, boxing, cricket, and fencing. Pierce Egan was a British journalist and sports writer, who also wrote about popular culture. His 1821 book, Life in London, was adapted into a stage play and became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances at the Adelphi Theatre. This volume is uncommon, but particularly in its original illustrated hardback boards. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. This volume was previously owned by Purnell Bransby Purnell, who was MP for Gloucester in the early nineteenth century. In the publisher's original binding. Externally, worn. In five volumes. Bound by C. H. Whittmann. A continuation of Frederick Lillywhites 'Scores and Biographies', which contained the cricket scores from 1772 to 1854. A referentical work containing cricket scores from 1855 to 1875. and also containing many biographies of prominent cricket players throughout those years. Volume I looks at 1867 to 1868. Volume II looks at 1869 to 1870. Volume III looks at 1871 to 1872. Volume IV looks at 1873 to 1874. Volume V looks at 1875 to 1876. The title pages of Volumes I to III state the works as being Volumes X to XII in the series. Volume IV has the second half of Volume XII bound to the front, with Volume XIII to the rear. Compiled by Arthur Haygarth, an amateur cricketer. He is noted for being a significant historian of cricket. During his career, he played first class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club and Sussex. He also researched information and statistics for cricket throughout his life. In a full calf binding.
