Edgeworth, Maria
Lazy Lawrence and the White Pigeon
London, Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1862. . Hardcover. Size: 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. A variant binding of this, another contribution to her Stories for Children series. Tiny, little, pocket-sized copy of a beloved children's book, bound in 32mo. format, brown cloth over boards, gilt-stamped design and blind-stamped decorations to front and rear covers. Edition not stated, but is perhaps an early reprint in that the title page from the true first edition, published the prior year, is bound in, thus, two frontispieces, both black-and-white engravings. Previous owner's inscriptions at first free endpaper, else a clean, unmarked copy. 94, [2] pp. including publisher's ads. All edges gilt. Maria Edgeworth (1 January 1768 – 22 May 1849) was "a prolific Anglo-Irish novelist of adults' and children's literature," according to her Wikipedia page and to Allibone's entry for her (Volume I., pp. 542-543). She is alleged to have been one of the first realist writers in children's literature but also wrote capably about "estate management, politics and education, and corresponded with some of the leading literary and economic writers, including Sir Walter Scott and David Ricardo." Allibone's entry mentions several positive reviews of her work in leading literary and political reviews of the day including London Quarterly, London Monthly Review, North American Reviews, and others.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Eggers, Dave
The Lifters
New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 2018. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound hardcover, clean, if toned, minimal rubbing to extremities. Illustrated quite fancifully by Aaron Renier. Bound in blue cloth over boards, title blind-stamped to front board, silver lettering to spine. The review from commonsensemedia dot org say "When the struggling Flowerpetal family moves to the decaying town of Carousel in search of a better life, it sets 12-year-old son Granite (hoping to be known as Gran at his new school) on the path to a fateful meeting with THE LIFTERS, a secret society formed to help keep Carousel's streets and buildings from collapsing. Things have been steadily falling apart since the town's carousel company, once world-famous, shut down. Morale is low, the citizens squabble, and buildings suddenly fall down for no reason. Middle school is pretty grim also. But Gran begins to suspect that the strange, fierce girl in his class, the only one to befriend him (when she's not punching him in the stomach), knows more than most about what's going on -- and may be doing something about it. Also, magic seems to crop up in unexpected places." 341 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Near Fine
