Sir Philip Sidney (30 November 1554 – 17 October 1586) "was an English poet, courtier, scholar and soldier who is remembered as one of the most prominent figures of the Elizabethan age. His works include a sonnet sequence, Astrophel and Stella, a treatise, The Defence of Poesy (also known as The Defence of Poesie or An Apology for Poetrie) and a pastoral romance, The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia," according to his Wikipedia entry. He was born in Ken of an aristocratic family, educated at Shrewsbury School and Christ Church, Oxford. He was never published in his lifetime but left behind 106 love sonnets that were published posthumously. He fought as a Protestant against Spanish Catholics, was shot in the thigh for his troubles "and died of gangrene 26 days later, at the age of 31"; his hagiography says that he wasn't sufficiently armored because he'd given his to an inferior, allegedly uttering the words as he lay dying, "Thy necessity is yet greater than mine" (Wikipedia). The illustrator, Margaret Lindsay, Lady Huggins (born on 14 August 1848, in Dublin – died on 24 March 1915, in London), was "an Irish-English scientific investigator and astronomer" and pioneer in spectroscopy. She illustrated and wrote or co-wrote a number of then influential texts, including Atlas of Representative Stellar Spectra (1899). She and her husband William Huggins "worked together for thirty-five years as equal collaborative investigative partners," so there's that (Wikipedia). viii [1], 10-111 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
