London , T Nelson and Sons, 1886-1888. Cloth. Two volumes of Children's stories. Illustrated throughout, with four colour plates to each volume and several monochrome vignettes. In original paper covered boards. These two books are anthologies of shorter stories aimed at children. The story titles are 'The Little Cook', 'The Little Nurse', 'The Little Housemaid', 'The Little Table Maid', 'On the Beach', 'Sailing the Boat', 'The Shell Gatherers' and 'The First Bathe&apos. The tales are fictional with educational undertones and were created by the publishing company T Nelson and Sons. Both The Little Workers and At the Seaside were first published a few years earlier in 1884. In original paper covered boards. Externally, smart with slight rubbing to the spines and extremities. Loss to the head and tail of spines to both volumes. Some handling marks and small tidemarks to boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper to both volues, dated 1890. Front hinge to Little Workers is slightly strained but firm. Internally, both volumes are generally firmly bound. Some offsetting to endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

A scarce work, with beautiful illustrations throughout. This work is a series of rhyming tales regarding many different animals. It also features the well known nursery rhymes of 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' and 'Mary Had a Little Lamb&apos. Illustrations are by various people including K Harke, E Harries and Newnham. In original pictorial boards. Externally, generally smart with bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Further rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Remnants of label to the head of front joint. Gift inscription to the front pastedown, 'With best wishes from Mummy and All&apos. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with occasional scattered spots. Good . This curious and uncommon work lists and illustrated many animals such as elephants, camels, giraffes, zebras, tigers and a rhinoceros. In original quarter cloth publisher's binding with pictorial boards. Externally, rubbed to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Small loss to the head and tail of spine due to rubbing. An anthology of twenty short stories, supplemented with fifteen full plate illustrations. Collated, complete.Anonymously published, most of the twenty stories are either set in Australia or concern voyages either to or from Australia, and tell tales containing convicts, Aborigines, buried treasure and shipwrecks. Many of these stories originally appeared in either the Victorian era periodical 'The Leisure Hour', which ran weekly from 1852 to 1905, or the magazine 'Sunday at Home' published weekly by The Religious Tract Society from 1854 to 1940.A prize bookplate dated December 1902 demonstrates that this work was given to 'Frank Carpenter' by St Andrew's Church Sunday School, Grimsby. England/London, Alf Cooke, c1905. Hardback. A scarce twentieth century children's book. An author and date is not stated to this work. Only 'Made in England.' 'Alf Cooke' colophon to the rear board. Alf Cooke Printworks was a business founded by its namesake in 1866. He expanded into colour printing in 1868 and in 1885 was appointed by Queen Victoria as 'Her Majesty's Colour Printer&apos. Lacking pages 11-14. Bobo's Motor Car followed another work in the series titled Bobo's Adventures. This is the second book in the series and to the front pastedown it is stated 'Other Titles in Preparation&apos. Extremely scarce, with none on Copac. This work follows Bobo's adventures with her many friends such as Teddy, Jumbo the Elephant and a gentleman who is a Golly Doll. The Golly character is the fictional character created by Florence Kate Upton in the late nineteenth century. The black doll has been the subject of controversy due to its depiction of people of colour. In quarter cloth binding with pictorial front board. Rear board is plain and grey. Externally, generally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of spine and patches of rubbing to the front board, heavier to extremities. Prior owner's light writing below the title. Front hinge is strained but fir. Evidence of a prior owner's writings to front pastedown and title page, which has been erased. Several pages throughout have previously erased writing from a prior owner. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned due to paper used. To pages 32-27 a prior owner has coloured the drawings using ink. The colouring is very charming. Occasional spots to pages, heaviest to pages 10 and 15. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
