The first edition.A charming Rupert volume, containing eight tales of the bear's exciting adventures.Illustrated in Alfred Bestall's distinctive colourful style throughout, with four illustrations per page in a comic book style. Rupert Bear is a popular children's comic strip character, a cornerstone of British culture since his first appearance in 1920. He was originally created by Mary Tourtel, in order to win sales for the Daily Express from its rivals, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail. In 1935, the stories were taken over by Alfred Bestall, who had previously worked for 'Punch&apos.Including 'Rupert and Uncle Bruno', 'Rupert, Bill, and the Bluebells', 'Rupert and the Silver Trowel', 'Rupert and the Iceberg', 'Rupert and the Air Smugglers', 'Rupert's Marvellous Bat', 'Rupert and the Pedlar', and 'Rupert and King Frost&apos.Collated, lacking endpapers. All other pages are present. In the original publisher's paper covered boards, rebacked with the original boards and spine restored. Externally, generally smart. Loss and age-tnoing to the backstrip. Two charming collections of children's short stories and poems, written in the nineteenth century, Schnick Schnack Trifles for the Little-Ones and Buds and Blossoms of Childish Life. Both works have been colourfully illustrated by German artist Oscar Pletsch. Schnick Schnack Trifles for the Little Ones contains an illustrated frontispiece and an additional thirty-one illustrated chromolithograph plates, all in colour. Collated and complete.Buds and Blossoms of Childish Life contains an illustrated frontispiece and an additional thirty illustrated chromolithograph plates, all in colour. Collated, and lacking two plates. Containing a previous owner's ink signature to the front free-endpaper of each volume and a contemporary ink inscription to the front blank of Buds and Blossoms, dated 1870. Also containing a previous bookseller's sticker to the front pastedown of each volume. Uniformly rebound in half cloth with marbled boards. Externally, sound, with some shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and extremities. A spot to the front board of 'Schnick Schnacks&apos. Containing a previous owner's ink signature to the front free-endpaper of each volume and a contemporary ink inscription to the front blank of Buds and Blossoms, dated 1870. Also containing a previous bookseller's sticker to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, front hinge is strained in 'Schnick Schnacks', but remaining binding is generally firm. Binding is very tender in 'Buds and Blossoms', with plate opposite page A2 lifting at the tail, and pages A2, H2, and two plates opposite H2 detached but present. A pop-up book in the original quarter cloth and pictorial paper boards. 2 pop-up models. Collated complete. Ink inscription to the title page. This is a Father Tuck "Come-to-Life" Little Book containing the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, with colour illustrations and pop-up models. Raphael Tuck & Sons was founded in 1866, selling pictures, greeting cards, and postcards. They started publishing books with pop-ups from the 1890s. The books in the series A Father Tuck "Come-to-Life" Little Book were small and each had two fan-folded pop-ups. Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library. In the original quarter cloth and pictorial paper boards. Externally very smart, with a scattering of spots to the front board, and minimal bumping to the extremities and the spine. Staples are starting to rust. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, except for a couple of marks to the paste downs. One of the pop-up models does not sit up as it should. First thus of this beautifully animated Snow White in the original publisher's quarter cloth binding. Illustrated in colour by Vojtech Kubasta. Complete with eight fully functioning pop-ups and a movable animation to the front board. There are two additional movable animations within the pop-ups. This copy is missing the tab to the front board which allows the sliding animation reveal to work. However, this is movable through the other side. There is also a child's drawing behind the doorway movable animation. With this exception, all the animations and pop-ups are in great condition and fully functioning.  In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding. Externally, very smart. There is some minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The front board is missing the tab to the front board which allows the sliding animation reveal to work. However, this is movable through the other side. Internally, firmly bound. A unique and very scarce 'Speaking Picture Book', with eight noise-producing cords to accompany a children's tale alongside bright illustrations, largely in working order. Very scarce work. The seventeenth edition. First produced in Germany by publisher Theodore Brand in 1878, with English, French and Spanish editions subsequently produced. This particular copy was produced in Germany.Dated c1893, as per a copy of the seventeenth edition owned by Peter Haining, author of "Movable Books" (1979). Bound in the publisher's pictorial cloth with the original music box and eight out of the nine musical cords in working order. This charming work presents life on a farm, with eight colourful chromolithograph plates alongside a page of verse surrounding the animal in question, with an arrow directing the corresponding cord to make the animal's sound. With a cockerel, donkey, lamb, birds, cow, cuckoo, goat and 'Papa and Mama&apos. Collated, with all required plates and cords, although the cord depicting the sound of the cuckoo is detached and held in an envelope.These wonderfully realistic sounds are created through a series of paper reeds, pipes and bellows stored in the box underneath the story. Very rare to see in complete working order, as with this copy. Described by Peter Haining as "The piece de resistance of any collection of movables, or toy-books for that matter", in Haining's "Movable Books", (1979), p. 136.With the ink inscription 'To Claire, with love from Aunt Jessie, 1913', to the title page. Bound in the publisher's pictorial cloth with the original music box. Externally, sound, with slight bumping to the extremities and one or two tears to the cloth at the joints. Spine is a little discoloured, with the odd mark to cloth. Box has detached from rear cover. Internally, most pages are disbound, with all plates and pages present. Two instances of tape repair to the inner margins. Pages are age toned and clean. Ink inscription to the title page. Final page has separated from the box, resting on the top of the box like a lid, with inner workings accessible. Cords are a little discoloured, with eight out of the nine cords attached, and the final cord present in an envelope. Sounds are a little faint in some cases, although remaining eight sounds are in working order. Front edge of the box is a little tender. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
