1550173758 CZAJKOWSKI, CHRIS, Wildfire in the Wilderness
CZAJKOWSKI, CHRIS
Wildfire in the Wilderness
Madeira Park, BC: Harbour Publishing, 2006. First Edition. Softcover. ISBN: 1550173758. Only slight wear ; A bright, solid book, charming drawings of the the places and wildlife thoughout. ; Trade PB; B&W Illustrations; 8.90 X 6.06 X 0.87 inches; 224 pages; stories of shimmering mountain peaks, roaring snow-fed creeks, bears, eagles and monstrous storms; and tales of her dogs--Bucky (short for Buckethead), who chases everything; Max, who tussles with wolves and a porcupine; and Raffi, a large, happy animal who thinks he's a lapdog. The book culminates in a white-knuckle account of the all-too-close Lonesome Lake fire of 2004, from its infancy as a lightning strike reported in nearby Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, to Czajkowski's realization that her first wilderness cabin had been consumed by fire, and the dreaded moment when she was ordered by radiophone to evacuate everyone from the area.Czajkowski became well known to Canadians through her correspondence with Peter Gzowski on CBC's Morningside, where she described her initial foray into the wilderness near Lonesome Lake. The letters were expanded into the bestselling Cabin at Singing River. This remote area inland from Bella Bella originally became famous through the exploits of Ralph Edwards best known for his efforts to preserve the wild life of northern British Columbia. Lonesome Lake became a wildlife refuge which after his death was tended by his son John. Unfortunately the 2004 wildfires destroyed the buildings at this remote outpost.. Near Fine .

1550170120 DANGLEMAIER, RUDI & MARTIN SEGGER, Pioneer Buildings of British Columbia
DANGLEMAIER, RUDI & MARTIN SEGGER
Pioneer Buildings of British Columbia
Madeira Park, BC: Harbour Publishing, 1989. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 1550170120. Gift inscription on title page, 1" closed tear bottom fore corner of dustjacket. ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. ; Color Paintings; 10 X 10 X 0.75 inches; 160 pages; This gorgeously illustrated hardcover presents an interpretive survey of British Columbia's architectural heritage recorded by artist Rudi Dangelmaier in a series of watercolours and oil paintings. Trained in Germany, Danglemaier has been documenting pioneer buildings in Saskatchewan and British Columbia since 1929. The buildings portrayed in this book date from the mid 19th to the early 20th century and reflect cultural influences and building techniques indigenous to British Columbia. Dangelmaier's work moves beyond weathered facades and sagging beams, the stuff of conventional architectural art. His paintings exude a sense of place and time. They capture the spirit of an architecture that is as much a part of a culture as it is a part of the landscape. This is a unique and beautiful testament to the humble genius of BC's folk architects.. Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket .

DAVIES, ALAN
Antisemitism in Canada History and Interpretation
Waterloo, ON: Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 1992. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0889202214. DJ and boards show light shelf wear, previous owner's name has been inked out on back free end paper, front flap creased, extensive highlighting of text. ; A bright, solid book. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; Carleton Women's Experience; 9.1 X 6.0 X 0.9 inches; 304 pages; "Eleven leading thinkers in the field examine antisemitism in Canada, from the colonial era to the present day, in essays which reflect the saga of the nation itself. The history of the Jewish community, its struggles and its fortunes is mirrored in the wider history of Canada, from Confederation to the present. The contributors cast light on Canadian antisemitism through a thorough examination of old and new tensions, including Anglo-French, east-west and Jewish-Ukrainian relations. Attitudes to Jews in pre-Confederation Canada, French Canada from Confederation to World War I as well as the interwar years, and in twentieth-century Ontario and Alberta from 1880-1950 are illustrated in various chapters. Of particular interest are the examinations of such well-known figures as Goldwin Smith, the greatly admired liberal historian of Victorian Canada, Adrien Arcand, the would-be Führer from Quebec, and James Keegstra and Ernst Züdel, of more recent notoriety. Analyses are also provided of Nazism and Canadian Protestantism and Jewish-Ukrainian relations since World War II. This is a complex and contentious subject; yet, to understand the ideas and forces that have sought to undermine the Jewish presence in Canada is to understand the dangers that threaten any democratic society, and thereby to guard against them.". The Chilliwack Story
Chilliwack BC: Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society, 2007. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0969591136. A near-fine volume in an near-fine DJ. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. B&W photos throughout. ; Oblong Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 360 pages; A thorough and comprehensive history of Chilliwack, it's people, places and industry, which developed along the old heritage routes to the interior of BC. "From Greendale to Popkum and from Yarrow to Chilliwack, a series of small communities developed along these roads, often with just a school, general store (with post office) and church. These centres have grown over the years as urbanization has swelled the local population, but - and this is important to the identity of Chilliwack - people still say that they come from Vedder Crossing or Rosedale or Sardis. This book is an attempt to, at the very least, recognize that Chilliwack is a community of villages spread along these older heritage routes.". Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .
