0889822123 BRIDGEMAN, J. M., Here in Hope
BRIDGEMAN, J. M.
Here in Hope
Lantzville, BC: Oolichan Books, 2002. First Edition. Softcover. ISBN: 0889822123. Signed by Author; Only slight wear ; A bright, solid book, signed by the author on title page. B&W photos; 8.4 X 5.4 X 0.6 inches; 200 pages; "Here In Hope is a history of place, a spiritual and ecological memoir, and a biography of the community of Hope, British Columbia. J.M. Bridgeman tells the stories of this land and its people with both a mystic's sense of wonder and a scientist's curiosity about the precise nature of the forces that shape our world. Elegantly written in precise lyrical language, Bridgeman describes the evolution of the place called Hope, and gives voice to the forces that have shaped this unique area. The story of Hope begins with a narrative of geological forces: the collision of mountain ranges, the slow grinding of earth by glaciers and ice, the carving out of valleys, and the convergence of two great rivers. Human habitation then enters this landscape, firstly with Aboriginal settlers who lived lightly on the land and saw in the mountains and rivers the sacred interconnectedness of all life. Then come the explorers and fur traders who moved into the area. Next comes the discovery of gold in the Fraser River, which brought a rush of inhabitants with their European-shaped ideology of human dominance over nature. And as the world chugged into the industrial age with its railroads, new technologies, and more immigrants, the ecology of this pristine environment changed profoundly.". Near Fine .

BROWN, JENNIFER S.H., Strangers in Blood: Fur Trade Company Families in Indian Country
BROWN, JENNIFER S.H.
Strangers in Blood: Fur Trade Company Families in Indian Country
Vancouver BC: University of British Columbia Press, 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. As new ; A near-fine volume in a near-fine DJ. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. B&W and color illustrations; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 255 pages; "For two centuries (1670-1870), English, Scottish, and Canadian fur traders voyaged the myriad waterways of Rupert's Land, the vast territory charted to the Hudson's Bay Company and later splintered among five Canadian provinces and four American states. The knowledge and support of northern Native peoples were critical to the newcomer's survival and success. With acquaintance and alliance came intermarriage, and the unions of European traders and Native women generated thousands of descendants. Brown illustrates that the lives and identities of these children were shaped by factors far more complex than "blood." Sons and daughters diverged along paths affected by gender. Some descendants became Métis and espoused Métis nationhood under Louis Riel. Others rejected or were never offered that course-they passed into white or Indian communities or, in some instances, identified themselves (without prejudice) as "half breeds." The fur trade did not coalesce into a single society. Rather, like Rupert's Land, it splintered, and the historical consequences have been with us ever since.". Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .

CANDOW, JAMES E.
Cantwells’ Way a Natural History of the Cape Spear Lightstation
Black Point, NS: Fernwood Publishing, 2014. First Edition. Paperback. ISBN: 1552666727. Card covers show light shelf wear, corner curl.; A bright, solid book. B&W illustrations; Trade PB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 160 pages; "In Cantwells' Way, James E. Candow examines the relationship between people, place and technology at the Cape Spear Lightstation in Newfoundland and Labrador. Modern lighthouses and fog alarms were products of the new understandings of light and sound that emerged from the Scientific Revolution, so lightkeepers and their families were therefore in the vanguard of technological change in their communities. Despite this, they continued to practise traditional activities such as gardening and berry picking, which were part of the informal economy of rural Newfoundland. Life at the Cape Spear Lightstation reflected the underlying duality of Newfoundland society in the period.". Very Good+ .

1550170686 CHERRINGTON, JOHN A., The Fraser Valley a History
CHERRINGTON, JOHN A.
The Fraser Valley a History
Madeira Park, BC: Harbour Publishing, 1992. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 1550170686. DJ shows some shelf wear, with short tears, creasing light chipping top of spine. 1" tear on back of DJ, upper edge.; A tight solid book. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; 11.1 X 8.8 X 1.0 inches; 391 pages; "One of the world's most fertile agricultural regions, the Fraser Valley is in the midst of explosive change from the pressures of technology and urbanization. The author follows the Valley's history from the eighteenth century when Stalo natives were constantly on guard against visits from raiding Yacultas, through the Victorian era, when waves of settlers fought harsh winters, floods and mosquitoes to build a new community in the Valley, to the twentieth century, when the depredations of two world wars and the impact of the automobile changed the Valley forever.Throughout, Cherrington reminds us that beneath the serene, increasingly urbanized surface of the Fraser Valley, there is a turbulent past of Sasquatches and steamships, fur traders and fishermen, priests and prospectors - a recent past that, in an era of freeways and microchips, seems increasingly remote.".
