Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; The Northwest library, # 3; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 176 pages; "Overland to the Cariboo summarizes the unprecedented journey of Thomas McMicking and his approximately 150 companions in a caravan from Fort Garry (later called Winnipeg) to the goldfields of British Columbia. Thousands of gold seekers reached the Cariboo goldfields by sea; only a few hundred risked travelling by land from eastern Canada. Among the youngest of the overlanders was Archibald McNaughton, from Montreal, who became Margaret McNaughton's husband. She was his second wife, after he had first married his cousin who died in 1887. Born in Montreal, and well-educated, he was appointed assessor and collector for the District of Cariboo on the 7th of March, 1884, and thereafter had much involvement in Cariboo mining." A bright, solid book, DJ in Mylar. Small foldout map bound in after list of illustrations (Map of New Caledonia, undated), a larger map in fine condition in pocket attached to back board. This is based on a 1907 map (by Morice) of Northern British Columbia . Appendices and index at back. ; B&W Illustrations; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 368 pages; Morice, who lived 1859-1938, was a missionary sent to British Columbia in 1880. He served in posts such as Williams Lake, Fort Saint James. In his travels, he made notes about the countryside and the people, drew up a map and eventually published this book in Toronto in 1904 by William Briggs and in 1906 an expanded British edition of which this is a facsimile. After leaving missionary work he went on to write a number of books on western Canadian & mission history.. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket .
