Dublin, Committee of Public Safety, 1915. Brochure/Pamphlet. A nice copy of this very scarce pamphlet, questioning the use of DORA in Ireland during the First World War. Very scarce work.A pamphlet looking into the Defence of the Realm Act (DORA) that was put in place during World War One. The Act gave the British government extraordinary emergency powers during the War. In Ireland the Act was applied in a harsher manner, used to institute martial law.Though the implication of the Act was felt in Ireland, it was later significant expanded upon after the 1916 Easter Rising. In the original paper wraps. Externally, the outer leaves are a little discoloured with some spots. Faint pencil mark to the front wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Detailing the proceedings at the election and inauguration; the addresses of various public bodies; and reports of the speeches at the dinner. With a list of the noblemen and gentlemen who attended. Featuring six engraved plates to the rear, including a folding plate depicting the view of the Grand Banqueting Hall. Rebacked in a calf binding, with the original pictorial paper covered boards. A very scarce handwritten essay on the English Revolution, the text beginning 'Previously to the French Revolution, the English revolution was the greatest event in Europe&apos. Neatly written on faintly lined paper.'Emmeline' written in pencil to the verso of the front endpaper, written in the same hand as the essay.Throughout the essay there are the occasional corrections written in another ink, presumably a teacher marking the essay.Occasionally dated throughout the text, the earliest date being October 11th (1862), and the latest being 26th March 1863 in Emmeline's hand, and 30th March 1863 in the teacher's hand.Bookplate of Egerton Parker to the front paste down. Parker was a teacher and house master at Hereford Cathedral School for over twenty years. Generally known as Ege Parker, he was passionate about the study of history. In the original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Spine is a little faded, with minor fading to the head of the front board. Minor marks and a little rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Small patch of lifting to the head of the spine. Bookplate to the front paste down. Rear endpaper is detaching to the tail. Doodle to the recto of the rear endpaper. A few pages to the rear have been excised. Internally, generally firmly bond. Pages are a little age-toned and clean with a few spots. Written in two columns, containing addresses of customers (or suppliers) and amounts paid. Including date headings to each entry. Bookplate of JN. Williams, Stationer and Patenter of Improved Account Books to front pastedown. Unfortunately, the business is unclear as the writing has faded in places. In a reverse calf binding. Externally, worn, with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Splitting to the leather in a couple of places. Hinges are very tender. Collated, complete.This impressive laboratory was opened by the Nobel Prize winning father of nuclear physics, Sir Ernest Rutherford, in October of 1927, and was funded by Bristolian businessman and philanthropist Henry Herbert Wills, a member of the Wills tobacco family.Along with his brother Sir George Alfred Wills, he was responsible for the building of the impressive neo-gothic Wills Memorial Building, a landmark building of Bristol University, in memory of his father, opened in 1925. Although anonymous, this is particularly notable as a document of London businesses in the late Nineteenth Century, many of which have since folded. Featuring longstanding establishments such as Debenhams and Freebody, as well as then-prosperous mainstays of London such as Marshall and Snelgrove of Oxford Street, Hitchcock Williams and Company of St Pauls and Stapley and Smith of London Wall, the ledger conveys a London in which family run, relatively niche, businesses could exist and thrive in the shadow of its most famous monuments and on its busiest streets. Contains bookbinder's label to pastedown. In reverse calf binding. Externally sound with some markings to boards and wear to backstrip and extremities. Two very scarce works bound together in a half calf signed binding from Maclehose.The first work present - retaining its original paper wraps - is 'The Prince and Stewart of Scotland and the Stewartry Lands in Ayrshire&apos. Illustrated with two plates.The second work is a short pamphlet titled 'The Prince of Wales in Ayrshire', and was reprinted from the Glasgow Register.Both works were published on the occasion of the visit of Edward VIII - then Prince of Wales - to Ayrshire. This was ten years prior to his appointment as King of England, and his subsequent abdication.With the bookplate of Glasgow lawyer and book collector David Murray to the front pastedown, and his inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper. In 1927, Murray presented his personal library of some 15,000 printed books and 200 manuscripts to the University to the University of Glasgow, with many of the works relating to Glasgow and the West of Scotland. In a signed half morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Fading to back strip, with light rubbing to back strip head and perimeters of front board. Bookplate to front pastedown, inscription to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. The first work retains its original front and rear paper wraps. Pages clean and bright.
