The Royal College of Physicians received the royal charter in 1518 from King Henry VIII, affirmed by Act of Parliament in 1523. It was the first medical institution in England to become a Royal College. A second edition, revised and enlarge. A reprint of the 1878 edition. Complete in five volumes. Includes biographical sketches of all the eminent physicians, whose names are recorded in the annals from the foundation of the college in 1518 to its removal in 1825, from Warwick Lane to Pall Mall East. In full cloth binding with gilt armorial decoration to the front of each volume. Externally, lovely condition with only some minor rubbing to the boards. Bristol, J W Arrowsmith, 1910. Cloth. The first printing in book form of this seventeenth century historical account of the city of Bristol by William Adams, Francis F. Fox's presentation copy. Antiquarian Francis Fox came in possession of William Adams's Chronicle of Bristol in 1907, and had it transcribed by Miss E. Salisbury, then published in the present volume as a limited edition by subscription. With notes and corrections. The present copy was inscribed by Fox ' 'Peter Burges,' signed and dated 1911. The original manuscript was initiated in circa 1623, the last date mentioned in 1648. It was of aid to Samuel Seyer to complete his work History of Bristol and its Neighbourhood.Illustrated with a frontispiece facsimile of the original manuscript, tissue guarded. Complete with half title.  From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things&apos.  In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, with some minor marks to the front board and minor rubbing throughout. Inscribed 'Peter Burges Esq from his friend Francis F Fox,' dated 1911. With P Burges' bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting and light offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with a tissue guarded frontispiece facsimile of the original manuscript. A first edition of William Henry Davenport Adams' cultural survey of the Augustan period. In the second volume, Adams focusses on the literature produced in the first half of the eighteenth century. Davenport Adams' biography of King Charles I, popularly known as the White King, The first edition of this scarce two-volume work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the boards and spines. Bookplate of Queen's College, London to the front paste down of each volume. William Henry Davenport Adams (1828–1891), was an English writer and journalist of the 19th century. He wrote a number of successful historical works on England. This two-volume biography, now a scarce find, concerns King Charles I. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally fairly smart, though faded, with bumping to the extremities and light wear to the head and tail of the spine. Front hinge to Vol I is tender. Rear hinge to Vol I and front hinge to Vol II are slightly strained but holding firm. Front free end paper is detached to Vol I. The first blank page to page 1 of Vol I are held by two cords only; the rest of the pages are firmly bound.
