The eighth edition.Bound without the frontispiece and engraved title page.An important history chronicling the history of the Kings and Queens of England, from the time of the Roman governments, up to the death of King James I in 1625.This 1684 edition includes a continuation that concludes the reign of King Charles I, and the first thirteen years of King Charles II. The continuation is by Edward Phillips based on the lost papers of Sir Thomas Clarges, and provided a valuable resource for the events of 1658 to 1660 with the Restoration of the monarchy.Baker's work is an exhaustive history that details the development of the British monarchy, government, and church, a work that was very popular at the time though it is known to have some inaccuracies. Baker wrote this work whilst imprisoned after he was make responsible for the debts of his wife's family, being reduced to poverty and his properties being seized, upon which he took refuge in Fleet Prison.This edition includes a complete list of the Kings and Queens of England with their reigning years, catalogue of the Dukes, Marquisses, Earls, Viscounts, and Barons of England, and a list of the degrees and ranks of all men and women, from the King and Queen to gentlemen and gentlewomen.Edward Phillips was the nephew of John Milton. Rebound in a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards, with new endpapers. Externally, with wear and loss to the leather, heavier to the leather to the rear joint, with smaller loss to the front joint and spine. Some light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spotting. Bound without frontispiece and engraved title page.Title page has been repaired, adhered to an additional leaf to the verso, with chips to the gutter. Small ink inscription to the title page. The occasional ink annotation to the margins. Scorch mark to the top right hand corner of pages from page 303-416, the section on Queen Elizabeth, with loss of text to those pages, heavier loss to pages towards the middle, where at its worst it has resulted in loss of 4" x 4". A very scarce fascinating log of the 1935 Sheppard and Balcombe cave dive of Wookey Hole, an important expedition, this being a limited edition illustrated account of the exploration. Very scarce, limited to an unknown number, this copy numbered 151.Illustrated with a photographic frontispiece, seven photographic plates, and some in-text graphs and diagrams.Collated, complete.This 1935 expedition Cave Diving Group was a pioneering exploration of the Wookey Hole Caves, the first successful Cave Diving expedition in Britain.The cave dive was undertaken by Jack Sheppard and Graham Balcombe, who both contributed to this faithful log recounting their expedition.This log provides a scientific and vivid description of the diver's exploration. The text includes their observations on each day, what they discovered, and an interesting note on the text of the expedition. Wookey Hole Caves have been used by humans for around 45,000 years, with Palaeolithic tools and fossilised animals found in them, and evidence of occupation of the caves from the Stone and Iron Age and into Roman Britain.With a foreword by Herbert Balch. Balch was an important archaeologist who explored the caves of Mendip Hills, and pioneered many techniques for modern caving. He led excavations at Wooley from 1904 to 1914. In 1912 he found a 1000 year old skeleton in the caves, which is rumoured to be the legendary Witch of Wookey Hole.Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Cambridge Libraries. All edges gilt. Inscribed to the limitations page of Volume I by the author. Thomas James Barratt (1841–1914) was an English businessman who was the chairman of the soap manufacturer A. & F. Pears. His pioneering methods of brand marketing has led him to be called "the father of modern advertising". This three-volume set provides a comprehensive history of Hampstead from the prehistoric era until the early 20th century. Barratt relates details of the literary history, poets, and writers who lived there, as well as information on the nature, geology, and wildlife of the area. Social history is also included, with details of the standards of living, and illustrations of homes through the eras. All volumes contain a frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations. Volume I is illustrated with a further fourteen plates and a folding map. Volume II is illustrated with a further thirty-one plates and two folding maps (one inserted in the pocket to the rear). William Barrett's major work and first published history of the city of Bristol. Originally published in 1789. Devoted to the origins of Bristol, its history in Saxon and Norman times and development in the eighteenth century, its civil government, trade, various religious foundations, notable benefactors, and eminent men of Bristol. While researching for the publication of this work, Barrett met with forger Thomas Chatterton who produced many documents for him. Many of his fabrications did make it into his History. However, it is accepted that the work was well produced and contained much genuine information. Number sixty-six of two-hundred and fifty copies produced in facsimile.
