Doyle, Michael E.
Radical Chapters: Pacifist Bookseller Roy Kepler and the Paperback Revolution
Syracuse, New York, Syracuse University Press, 2012. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Superior copy, gift-quality condition, inside and out, no discernible wear, bright and shiny dust jacket, protected. Bound simply in brown cloth over boards, gilt lettering to spine. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. From the publisher's blurb, "Long a hub for literary bohemians, countercultural musicians, and readers interested in a good browse, Kepler's Books and Magazines is one of the most influential independent bookstores in American history. When owner Roy Kepler opened the San Francisco Bay Area store in 1955, he led the way as a pioneer in the "paperback revolution." He popularized the once radical idea of selling affordable books in an intellectually bracing coffeehouse atmosphere. Paperback selling was not the only revolution Kepler supported, however. In Radical Chapters, Doyle sheds light on Kepler's remarkable contributions to pacifism and social change. He highlights Kepler's achievements in advocating radical pacifism during World War II, antinuclear activism during the Cold War era, and antiwar activism during the Vietnam War. During those decades, Kepler played an integral role, creating a community and a space to exchange ideas for such notable figures as Jerry Garcia, Joan Baez, and Stewart Brand. Doyle's fascinating chronicle captures the man who inspired that community and offers a moving tribute to his legacy." xix [1], 1-427 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Dreyfus, John, Eric Gill, and Robert Gibbings
A Typographical Masterpiece: An Account by John Dreyfus of Eric Gill's Collaboration with Robert Gibbings in Producing the Golden Cockerel Press Edition of 'the Four Gospels' in 1931
London, Bain & Williams Limited, 1991. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. 41 beautiful figures in black-and-white augment this important, unusual volume, a 1991 reprint of the 1990 original published by The Book Club of California, with original publisher's glassine wraps still present, creasing to front flap edge. Extremely handsomely bound in heavy red cloth over boards, with gilt lettering and illustration to front cover, lettering to spine. Unusually, a sort of colophon is located inside front flap, noting that "the design on the front board is a combination of two elements, both by Eric Gill. The border was designed in 1931 for an edition of Aesop's Fables, but not used and is here slightly enlarged. The lettering is an arrangement by Gill of letters he cut for the Golden Cockerel Press in 1928, here reduced." Includes other works by Gill including mock-ups, proofs, and photographs of the production of The Four Gospels. Dreyfus writes interestingly of the origins and development of the collaboration between the two book artists at The Golden Cockerel Press. This is a Special Limited Edition of only 250 copies, "printed by Meridan-Stinchour Press, on Superfine Paper from the Mohawk Paper Mills. The duotone photographs are by Michael Arsenault. The text was composed in Linotronic Galliard designed by Matthew Carter." xii [1], 1-103 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Used: Like New
