A guide to playing and scoring Mah Jong according to the Chinese rules. The most popular variations of the game during the 1930s, in fact, were based on semi-official rules in circulation - The Queens Club Rules and the rules laid down in this booklet by C.M.W Higginson. Both of these were based on Chinese variants which probably accounts for the fact that the game remained popular in Britain. Colour illustrated paper over card. The fifth edition of this work, first published in 1749 in the original French, and published in English for the first time in 1803. A fascinating analytical work on the strategies and rules of chess, with a lengthy introduction to the game and comprehensive analysis, along with information on various moves and when best to employ them. Written by François-André Danican Philidor (1726-1795) a French operatic composer and master chess player. He is often regarded as one of the best chess players of his time, and several chess moves have been named after him (including the infamous 'checkmate' method). Including an engraved frontispiece, a vignette title page, and numerous in-text engravings. Collated and complete. Also containing a handwritten note adhered to page 164, dated April 19th, 1818, disclosing a chess move. Bound in full contemporary calf.
