WALLACE, IRVING AND WALLACE, AMY
The Two - the Story of the Original Siamese Twins
London, Cassell. 1978, First Edition. (ISBN: 0304300411). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First UK edition. A near Fine unmarked copy with VG + complete dustjacket. The biography of the original Siamese Twins, Chang and Eng, who were born in 1811 in the village of Meklong, 60 miles west of Bangkok. Fated to spend their lives joined by a thick, fleshy ligament resembling an arm, 5 feet 6 inches long and 8 inches in circumference, that connected them at the base of their chests. Yet they could swim, perform gymnastic feats and lead relatively normal lives and in character they were dissimilar, Eng was quiet whilst Chang was hot tempered and quarrelsome. They were exploited by showmen, promoters and well wishers, loved (and made love) and searched in vain for the surgical miracle that would separate them and enable them to lead their individual lives. Chang's insistence on going to his own house in midwinter eventually led to the death both had feared, for Eng died, perhaps out of fear or shock, an hour after Chang's life ended. NOT EX LIB 23. JONES, DAVINA
Parallel Lives
Belfast, Appletree Press. 2005, First. (ISBN: 0862819636). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. An As New copy in pictorial laminated boards in an As New dustjacket. First Edition, First Printing. 206 pages. An affectionate look at two very different lives lived in tandem but intertwined by country house life on the Ards Peninsula in County Down. Castle Ward (now held by The National Trust) and Ballywhite House stood on opposite sides of Strangford Lough but their owners and those who lived on the estates found that their idyllic lives were changed for ever by the advent of the Second World War. This remarkable biography of Colonel William Brownlow, `The Major', and Agnes White chronicles two very different lives. One was well known in Northern Ireland society, becoming Lord Lieutenant for County Down - a World War II veteran who campaigned for local issues and championed horse-racing and country sports. The other life was lived more quietly behind the scenes as a working mother and wife, chorister and talented amateur artist, but both were the faces of working lives well spent. All the more fascinating for being true.. 16. As New/As New.
