PINNEY, LUCY
A Country Wife - Farms, Families and Other Foolhardy Adventures
London, Ebury Press. 2004, First Edition. (ISBN: 009189185X). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 342 pags. First edition, first printing. When Lucy Pinney arrived in the lush Dorset countryside 30years ago she was newly married, very enthusiastic and charmingly naive. After a bucolic love-affair worthy of a Thomas Hardy novel, Lucy launched herself into pig keeping, cake baking and lamb rearing with gusto. But nothing had prepared her for the essential oddness and precariousness of rural life. The book is a funny, honest and affectionate memoir of a life spent learning to know and love the countryside and those who live off the land. NOT EX LIB 23. Fine/Fine.

VAN DER POST, LAURENS
About Blady - a Pattern out of Time
London, Chatto and Windus. 1991, First. (ISBN: 0701138025). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very good+ unmarked copy which has a very small indentation to front top edge and age toning to page edges. Dustjacket is VG+ and is not price clipped. 255 pages. In this absorbing autobiographical memoir, Blady is not so much the principal (although she has a crucial part to play) as the core symbol and catalyst. It is a true story of people, events, themes and relationships which together have formed a special pattern in Laurens van der Post's life. Unlike anything he has written before, it combines intuitive fantasy with a taut dramatic narrative as the story gathers pace to the climax of Blady's great race. Outwardly random occurrencesm from the writer's childhood in Africa to the death of his son from cancer, provide the framework for the searching exploration that follows - an exploration into fundamental aspects of the human spirit, its besetting ills and troubles, and the life-forces that keep it intact. B2A. Very Good/Very Good.

POWERS, RICHARD GID
Secrecy and Power - the Life of J. Edgar Hoover
London, Hutchinson. 1987, First Edition. (ISBN: 0091725984). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with dustjacket which is not price clipped. First UK edition. x + 624 pages. 30 illustrations. As head of the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972, J. Edgar Hoover created a unique role for himself in American life - one that had never existed before, one that wil probably never exist again. Who was this man who engineered the notorious Palmer Raids at the age of 24; whose enemies ranged from John Dillinger to Martin Luther King; who reviled homosexuality, yet was often accused of it and kept files on his accusers; who was a law-and-order hero to one generation and a police-state villain to the next? Drawing on previously unknown personal documents, an exhaustive study of FBI files, and the Presidential papers of nine administrations, Powers presents a full-blooded portrait of the man behind the G-Man image, finding a personality more complex than Hoover's critics or defenders have brought to light. The author was Chief Medical Officer on the QE2 and other great Cunard ships for 12 years, responsible for the health of almost 3,000 passengers and crew. C-Six is the C stairway on 6 deck, positioned, as most ships' hospitals are, directly on the waterline at the centre of the ship to afford maximum stability and comfort, hence ironically but appropriately the address of the world most prestigious sick bay. These memoirs contain, naturally, medical emergencies, tales such as dentistry on a celebrity drunk, stories of chronic seasickness, acute appendicitis, drownings and a coronary in the casino. There is a large social side to his duties as he hosts a table slightly lower down from the Captain's, and his anecdotes about passengers are both affectionate and amusing. It is also an insight into how the systems of such a ship spring into action whenever a medical crisis arises. L. Near Fine/Fine. Signed by Author.

ROPER, ROBERT
Nabokov in America - on the Road to Lolita
New York, Bloomsbury USA. 2015, First. (ISBN: 9780802743633). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A new unread copy with new dustjacket. First Edition, First Printing. 354 pages. Illustrations in the text. Map endpapers. The author of the immortal Lolita nd Pale Fire, born to a distinguished Russian family, represents for many the apotheosis of the high modernist artist: cultured, refined - as European as they come. But Vladimir Nabokov, who came to America to escape the Nazis, grew to think of his time there as the richest of his life. Here and his Jewish wife could live and breathe, here they raised a beloved son in safety and normalcy. Robert Roper fills out this period of Nabokov's life with charm and insight - covering Nabokov's friendship with Edmund Wilson, his time at Wellesley and Cornell, his long work at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology. But the book finds its narrative heart in the writer's many summer sojourns in the wilds of the American West. The Nabokovs covered more than two hundred thousand miles by car as Vladimir indulged his most overwhelming passion - not for literature but for butterfly hunting. The book is also a love letter to American literature, tracing Nabokov's broad and ingenious embrace of it. Steeped in Russian, British, French and classical literature, he read prolifically among American writers or years. L. New/New.

The author was born in Danzig, where he practised as a barrister until Nazi persecution forced him to flee to England, arriving three weeks before the outbreak of war, where eventually he was released from internment and entered the catering business, rising to managerial status in the Grand Metropolitan chain. This biography tells of his marriage of convenience so that he can find domestic employment and his subsequent internment on the Isle of Man hastens the arrangement's failure and he begins to work towards a reunion with his wife and son, the family from whom the political situation in Germany had imposed his divorce.
