HORNE, ALISTAIR
Macmillan - 1894-1956 - Volume I of the Official Biography / Macmillan 1957-1986 - Volume II of the Official Biography
London, Macmillan. 1989, First Edition. (ISBN: 0333276914). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET. Volume I 1894-1956 - ISBN 0333276914 - A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket. xix + 537 pages. 51 illustrations. Volume II - 1957-1986 - ISBN 0333496213 - A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small indentation to rear) with near Fine dustjacket. xvii + 741 pages. 60 illustrations. The crofter's grandson and the duke's son-in-law, the soldier and the scholar, the publisher and the MP, the bon viveur and the devout high churchman, Harold Macmillan is perhaps the most complex and fascinating political figure of the 20th century. The distinguished historian Alistair Horne had the unique advantage of extensive interviews with Macmillan himself, together with exclusive access to his copious and unpublished diaries, letters and private papers, revealing the real Macmillan behind the showman. Remembered today as 'Supermac', Britain's most urbane and unflappable statesman, responsible for the Tory revival after the Second World War, and the one Minister with the courage to force Churchill to resign. A seminal work of biography and also a notable contribution to the history of our time. PLEASE NOTE - A HEAVY SET OF 2.5 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST 21. PARRIS, MATTHEW
Chance Witness - an Outsider's Life in Politics
London, Viking. 2002. (ISBN: 0670894400). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xix + 503 pages. 40 illustrations. Shortly after university and a spell at the Foreign Office and having decided not to become a spy, Matthew Parris applied to London Transport for an apprenticeship as a diesel fitter and was turned down. He decided to try his luck as a Conservative Party candidate - buoyed by an award from the RSPCA - presented by an incredulous Mrs. Thatcher - for rescuing a drowning dog from the River Thames, Parris beat Peter Lilley and Michael Howard to stand for the West Derbyshire constituency, and spent seven years in the House of Commons. His book is a surprising and eccentric story, sometimes funny and always entertaining, of a life lived in and around politics, by a writer once described by Alan Clark as the political commentator with 'the clearest pen and the most fastidious sense of quality'. Later they fell out, Parris accusing Clark of falling asleep in the Commons chamber and Clark calling Parris 'an absolute shit'. He of course provides insight into many politicians.
