A very scarce work.The twenty-second edition.ESTC citation number N35387.With six in-text illustrations.Three pages of adverts to the rear. An account of the life and death of the criminal Thomas Savage, who was twice executed, a cautionary tale for youth.In 1688 Savage murdered a maid at his Master's house, hitting her with a hammer. This tale explains how Savage had already shown his evil tendencies by not attempting church on the Sabbath, which was illegal at the time. Savage was executed twice, the first attempt to kill him being unsuccessful, thus shocking everyone when he suddenly started breathing once more. In a full rebacked calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with minor marks to the boards. Light bumping to the extremities. Minor rubbing to the extremities. A small amount of wear to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with the occasional spot. Pages are a little closely cropped to the tail, only affecting the signatures. First published in 1845, this work is not only a biography but also a philosophical essay. A mixture of historical and anecdotal details it covers the life of Georges Brummell, an iconic figure of regency England. Brummell was a close friend of the Prince Regent, the future King George IV. His style of dress, consisted of understated, but perfectly tailored garments, rejecting the overly ornate fashions of the day. He wore long black coats, full length trousers with pristine shirts and cravats, a forerunner of the modern men's suits. This mode of dress, often referred to as dandyism, he established as a fashion. After living a lavish lifestyle, mixing with aristocratic society he was forced in 1816 to flee to France to escape debtors prison, and eventually died there of syphilis in an asylum, aged sixty two. Charles James Apperley was a Welsh sportsman and sporting writer, widely known as Nimrod, the pseudonym under which he published his works. Apperley first began publishing his works 'on the chase and on the turf' through his contributions of a series of articles to 'The Sporting Magazine' that covered horse races, hunt meets and other sporting events. This copy is 'no.33' of a two hundred and fifty copy limited edition run. Collated complete, copiously illustrated throughout with thirty two tipped-in plates, four of which are coloured. This text was edited 'with additions' by E. D. Cuming. This copy is lacking its original dustwrapper. In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Externally very smart. Bumped to extremities and slightly bumped to head and tail of spine. Slight sunning to spine. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally generally firmly bound, slightly strained in places. Pages bright and clean with the odd light scattered spotting to the occasional page. Very faint offsetting to endpapers. Very Good . James Watt was a Scottish inventor, mechanical engineer, and chemist who improved on Thomas Newcomen's 1712 Newcomen steam engine with his Watt steam engine in 1776, which was fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both his native Great Britain and the rest of the world. This work also contains a few other works: 'On Machinery Considered in Relation to the Prosperity of the Working Class', 'Eulogium of James Watt, by Lord Jeffrey', and 'Historical Account of the Discovery of the Composition of Water&apos. This copy is an ex-library book, and Reigate Mechanics' Institution stamps can be found on the title page, page 57, and page 142. There is an accession number stamp on the front pastedown, and a date stamp of '8 MAR 1909' appears on the front free-endpaper. There is also a couple handwritten inscriptions on the front free-endpaper. One reads: 'B.C.J.G. Knight, Reigate 1938' and 'From Reigate (Surrey), Mechanics Institute, Founded 1837&apos. Bound in cloth. Externally, smart with bumping on the head and tail of the spine as well as the corners. Cloth binding also has fading on the extremities. Accession number stamp appears on front pastedown. Inscription for Reigate Mechanics' Institution appears on front free-endpaper along with a date stamp. Ex-library stamps appear on title page, page 57, and page 142. Internally, firmly bound. Pages contain scattered spots, particularly to the first and last few pages, as well as to pages 104-108.
