A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy, shiny blue cloth over boards, still sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spine, front pastedown cracking, with strings showing, else the text-block is still tight. Provides a comprehensive bibliography of the first appearances, official, of the work of Charles Dickens, not just first editions of novels but also magazine and journal issue journal entries, letters, collected works and the like. Listed chronologically but with little useful information regarding points of issue and other aspects of first editions included. The title continues: A Bibliographical list arranged in chronological order of the published writings in prose and verse of Charles Dickens (from 1834 to 1880). New York State Library Bulletin #61. Handsomely bound copy, one of 2,000, in very dark blue cloth with gilt titles on spine and front cover. Light fading at top of covers, but else no marks or damage. Fine and comprehensive catalogue of a bequest of a large private book collection that was made to the New York State Library. 360 books overall were described in detail by library staff bibliographers, and it's especially strong in Dickens, Twain and other giants in 19th century literature. William Charles Gotshall (May 9, 1870 - August 20, 1935) was an American civil engineer "known for his research on engineering economics in civil engineering published as Notes of electric railway economics and preliminary engineering (1903, 1904)." His extensive collection of books was donated to the Library in 1935. He married Adelaide von Rathgen on September 15, 1897, was commissioned as a Major of Engineers in the New York Guard in June 1917 and discharged in 1920, and he served admirably during W.W.I., "surveying, locating and constructing military roads as well as assisting in railroad design and camp layouts" (Wikipedia). 111 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
