Montreal: Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada, nd. Brown paper portfolio with seven sketches in protective glassine envelope: 1) W.H. Bartlett's Fredericton, New Brunswick 2) J.B. Schell's Charlottetown; 3) W.H. Bartlett's Fish Market, Toronto; 4) W.H. Bartlett's Halifax, from Dartmouth; 5) H.G. Hind's Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Expedition 1858; 6) W.H. Bartlett's Montreal from the Mountain, and; 7) B. Schell's Winnipeg, from St. Boniface ferry landing. All seven prints are very gently waved (slightly creased, in effect) and J.B. Schell's Charlottetown is lightly soiled on the left margin (about 5/16 of an inch in from the edge) but all are certainly suitable for mounting or framing. The original portfolio envelope the prints came in is fanned on the bottom corner and moderately damp-stained otherwise this is a very good set of important early Canadian sketches. From the blurb on the outside of the portfolio (front cover): This portfolio of early Canadian sketches provides an interesting insight into the aggressive spirit and unshakeable faith of the Pioneers of this great country. Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada has been closely associated with the growth and development of Canada since 1871 by providing personal and group insurance to generations of Canadians. In addition, Sun Life investments have played a significant role in the industrial and commercial expansion of Canada.

From the Introduction by Kenneth James Hughes: Here are six monographs on six significant Manitoba artists. Apparently independent of each other, these monographs and their subjects are united in two ways: the artists know and care for each other and, along with others, in their different ways they are producing not only works of art, but a solid foundation for a viable Manitoba visual art culture also. Different as they and their works are, these artists have been among the first group of Manitoba-born artists to fight both neglect, financial impoverishment and the lure of the East and South to stay in Manitoba and pioneer the role of the full-time professional artist. In this capacity they have given expression in their art to a set of Manitoba ways of seeing. These ways of seeing are the product of the specific quality of Manitoba rural and urban experience, the Manitoba landscape (or landscapes) and light, along with socio-historical and different ethnic factors peculiar to this place. In a few words, these artists have been involved in appropriating this place and space, rural and urban. They have created art as mirrors in which Manitobans can see themselves from a variety of angles. Of course the art is not solely of local interest. While rooted in this place and space, it has implications which extend way beyond the province and Canada as a whole.
