Botar, Oliver A.I.
A Bauhausler in Canada: Andor Weininger in the '50s [Signed]
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Robert McLaughlin Gallery | Gallery One One One, 2009. First Edition. Hardcover. pp. 277. Square 8vo. Pictorial boards. Richly illustrated with hundreds of black-and-white, and colour photographs, portraits, illustrations, etc. Slightest spine slant, else, bright, clean and unmarked; near fine. SIGNED in ink by the author to the title page. Andor Weininger (1899-1986) was a founder and member of the Bauhaus where he produced a fascinating body of work, mostly related to the avant-garde stage, attaining his greatest success with the Mechanical Stage-Review, a kind of moving abstract painting. Fleeing the National Socialists, Weininger emigrated to Canada where, in the 1950s, he produced a remarkably eclectic body of work, ranging from sketches of Lake Ontario to free, calligraphic abstract works. Yet his correspondence with Bauhaus figures such as Walter Gropius and Xanti Schawinsky reveals a frustration with the conservative cultural scene. Produced upon the occasion of a gift of over 150 works from New York’s Weininger Foundation to several Canadian art institutions, this publication takes a close look at Weininger in Canada, situating the career of this significant European Modernist within the context of the emergent Canadian abstract art scene. Weininger’s work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard University, and in many European collections. Published with Gallery One One One, University of Manitoba.

Nokum Is My Teacher [Complete with Cd-Rom]
Markham, Ontario, Canada, Red Deer Press, 2006. First Edition. Hardcover. Unpaginated. Oblong 4to. Pictorial boards. Richly and beautifully illustrated throughtout. Bright, clean, and unmarked with firm, sound binding; near fine and housed in like dustjacket. Accompanied with original CD-Rom, housed in clear plastic case affixed to the front pastedown. Nokum Is My Teacher is the poetic story of a young aboriginal boy, posing questions to his grandmother, his "Nokum", about the wider world beyond the familiarity of their home and community. Through a series of questions, Nokum guides her grandson towards an understanding of his need to fit into and learn more about this large world beyond the reserve. Nokum offers her grandson a vision of a world he can enter through imagination and reading, while retaining respect for the ways of his people. By the conclusion of the book, the young grandson has learned many new ideas from his grandmother and discovered his own wisdom in dealing with the changes in his life. Nokum Is My Teacher is a delightfully packaged book and audio CD, combining the written text in English and Cree with the mesmerizing voice of author/storyteller extraordinaire David Bouchard. It is illustrated by the hauntingly beautiful artworks of Allan Sapp, Cree elder, Governor General's Award-winner, and Officer of the Order of Canada. The singing and drumming are done by Alberta's Northern Cree, who have been nominated for a Grammy Award (2007) in the 'Native American music album' category.

Bovey, Patricia E.
Don Proch: Masking and Mapping
Winnipeg, Manitoba, University of Manitoba Press, 2019. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. pp. 133, [2]. Square 8vo. Pictorial boards. Richly illustrated with many black-and-white, and colour photographs, illustrations, portraits, facsimiles, et al. Bright, clean, and unmarked. Appears unread; as new. Since 1970, Manitoba artist Don Proch has built an astonishing body of work evoking a semi-mythical Prairie past and an unsettled and unresolved modernity. In his complex sculptures and life-size masks, Proch combines intricate draftsmanship with natural and found materials in surprising and transformative ways. Proch grew up in the farmland of north central Manitoba. Using the rolling hills and unique parkland vistas of the Asessippi valley he creates a complex personal iconography based on prairie life, landscape, geology and history. The result is what art critic Robert Enright called "inexplicable as a miracle". Proch first came to the Canadian art world's attention as part of a group of radical young artists in the 1970s, intent on shaking up the art establishment. His complex installations, masks, and silk screen prints quickly established his reputation as an innovator with a unique vision. Today he is recognized as one of the most influential visual artists to come out of western Canada, and his work can be found in major public and corporate collections including Canada's major art galleries. Richly illustrated with over 80 pieces, this book includes rare excerpts from Proch's notebooks which reveal his intricate working process. Surveying the course of Proch's career, curator and art historian Patricia Bovey discusses the themes and influences behind his work and their context within the history of Canadian art.
