The first edition of this work, a very scarce volume rarely seen in commerce. Edited with an introductory memoir by Alfred Barry. Published a year after the author's death. Photographic plate tipped in to frontispiece. Collated, complete with twenty illustrations. Containing a series of lectures on architecture and art delivered by Edward Middleton Barry, English architect in the nineteenth century. He is known for his many contributions to the London architectural scene, including the Theatre of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. His lectures often discussed the relationship of architecture with other branches of the arts.  From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the "Journal of Architecture". Inscribed by John Hooper Harvey (1911-1997) to the front free end papers of both volumes, an architectural historian who was "the most prolific and arguably the most influential writer on Gothic architecture in the post-war years". Volume I contains Batten's history of the origin and development of windmills, with records of them in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex. Illustrated with a frontispiece, three folding maps, and numerous plates. Collated complete. Volume II contains Smith's record of windmills in Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex and London. Illustrated with a frontispiece, two folding maps, and numerous plates. Marjorie Isabel Batten (1903-1962) wrote Volume I, an important book because it was published a year after the SPAB Windmills Fund was launched to raise money for the preservation of windmills. Illustrated throughout. Last seen at auction in 1993. In the original French. A very scarce work last seen at auction in 1993. A beautiful look at the impressive ceiling paintings found in the Grand Foyer of the Palais Garnier, the Paris Opera, a foyer that stretches over five-hundred feet. The Palais Garnier is well known today due to it being the setting of the novel 'The Phantom of the Opera' by Gaston Leroux. The ceiling was painted by Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry, who painted representations of various moments in the history of music. These include the allegorical figures of Eurydice, Psyche, Diana, and Aurora.The foyer was designed resembling a classical chateau, with gold accented by mirrors and windows. This work was published only one year after the Opera first opened. Illustrated with a frontispiece, six folding plates, and thirty-three plates. Written by Paul Baudry, who painted the ceiling. The Palais Garnier is his best known work. His style is full of elegance and grace, He also painted in the Court of Cassation, Chateau of Chantilly, Hotel Fould and Hotel Paivabut. In the original publisher's half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, sound, the boards are detached from the textblock. Some loss to the extremities. The house is the largest in Cheshire with a gateway to the north front of the house which the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner referred to as "the craziest Elizabethan frontispiece".
