Illustrated, with, a frontispiece and eight illustrations to volume I; a frontispiece and four illustrations to volume II; and a frontispiece and six illustrations to volume III. Philip Smith was a historian and periodical editor. He was also the pastor of the Congregational church at Crossbrook. He edited the Biblical Review and was a frequent contributor to the Quarterly Review. He had quite the career in teaching and was the first professor of mathematics and ecclesiastical history in New College, London. Other historical works he wrote include A Smaller History of England, A Smaller Ancient History of the East and The Student's Ecclesiastical History. In a half morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with patches of rubbing to the spines, mostly to raised bands, head and tail of spine. A few patches of rubbing to the joints. Marks to boards. Prior owners' inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Spotting to the first and last few pages. Instances of scattered spots to all volumes. Occasional pencil notations from prior owner to margins throughout, not affecting text. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

Imprint from Colophon. The work is in both Latin and Greek. An edition of this text has also been published with a different title page, as Volume 3 of Demosthenous, Aischinou, Deinarchou kai Demadou ta sozomena, 1748-1757. "In 1741 he published an edition of Demosthenes contra Leptinem, which he intended as a specimen of a projected complete edition of Demosthenes and Aeschines. He published the third volume of the work in 1748 and the second in 1757, but he failed to complete the first volume, which is represented only by the notes that Anthony Askew gave to Johann Jacob Reiske. He henceforth was known as Demosthenes Taylor." (DNB) John Taylor, 1704 – 1766, was English classical scholar. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. In 1732, he was appointed librarian, and in 1734 Registrary of the university. Somewhat late in life he took orders and became rector of Lawford in Essex and in 1751, canon of St Paul"s in 1757. Bound in leather with gilt lettering and decoration. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Front hinge held by cords only. INternally, firmly bound. Pages bright with occasional handling mark and spot. Including volumes X, XVIII, XXII, and XLVI. Presenting this four volume set of 'Sussex Archaeological Collections&apos. Containing Volume X (published in1858), Volume XVIII (published in1866), Volume XXII (published in1870), and Volume XLVI (published in 1903). All of these works are first editions. The Sussex Archaeological Society, founded in 1846, is one of the oldest county-based archaeological societies in the UK. A registered self-funding charity whose charitable aims are to enable people to enjoy, learn about and have access to the heritage of Sussex. Volume X was published in 1858 following the General Annual Meeting of the Sussex Archaeological Society, held at Arundel in 1857 and presided over by the Duke of Norfolk. This work contains a report of payments to the society, a list of the members, and a report of various archaeological concerns of the area. This volume contains 12 plates, one of them folding. There is also a 'Bone and Son' binding plate on the rear pastedown. Volume XVIII contains the bookplate of a previous owner on the front pastedown: 'Alfred Burton&apos. The volume was published in 1866, and gives a general report for the year 1865, including an account of receipts and payments, a list of members, and a report on the collections. This volume contains 6 plates, one of which is folding. Volume XXII was published in 1870 and contains a frontispiece of W.H. Blaauw, Esq. a valuable member of the Sussex Archaeological Society who had died this year. The report contains the usual list of members and financial report, as well as 11 plates, of them folding and in colour. Volume XLVI was published in 1903 begins with a list of officers and rules for the Sussex Archaeological Society. A folding plate listing the 'Statement of Assets and Liabilities' is to the recto of page xvi. The work also contains 67 plates, many of them photography and some of them folding. Bound in decorative cloth. Externally, smart with shelf wear and bumping to heads and tails of spines on all volumes. Externally, volume X has marks and fading to the front and back boards and bumping to extremities. Externally, volumes XVIII and XXII have some wear to extremities and spine. Volume XVIII has a tear to the rear joint, though it still remains firm, and both volume XVIII and XXII have chipping to the top of the spine. Externally, volume XLVI is smart with slight fading to the spine and minor shelf wear. Volume X has a binder's plate on the rear pastedown. Volume XVIII has the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, rear hinge to volume X tender, but remaining firm. Internally, bindings are tender, especially to volume X. Internally, volume X has some spotting throughout, and volume XXII contains a stain to the front free-endpapers. Otherwise, pages contain the odd spot but are clean. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
