Rowe, N[icholas]
The Tragedy of Jane Shore
London, Printed by Sam, Palmer, for Bernard Lintot, 1719. Third Edition. Softcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. The Tragedy of Jane Shore" was performed first at Drury Lane Theatre in London in 1714, a series of domestic scenes and private distresses, with the wife being "forgiven" for her transgressions (because she "repents") and the husband being "honored" (because he "forgives"). Notes from the previous owner, the bookseller and appraiser Robert Allen, suggest that this edition was precided by four others, though the title page says that this was the Third Edition; two were authorized, that is, Lintot's quarto edition of 1714 and the duodecimo edition of 1714. Two additional unauthorized piracies were published, too: Powell's Dublin octavo also of 1714 and an edition printed in the Hague, 1714. Disbound from a larger volume, still tightly bound, a bit soiled and mildly foxed throughout; first signature present but detached. The author, Nicholas Rowe (20 June 1674 – 6 December 1718), is best known for being an early editor of William Shakespeare, being himself an English dramatist and poet, being "appointed Poet Laureate in 1715" (Wikipedia). Naples, Italy, Dalla Stamperia e Cartiera Del Fabreno Printing and Paper Mill, 1831. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 16mo 6" - 7" tall. Perhaps a unique item, at the very least an uber-scarce item, and not available either on-line or in WorldCat. Published in apparent First Edition, though not so stated, in Naples, Italy, from the Fibreno printing and paper mill, 1831. A curious and rare item, featuring a brilliant black-and-white device at title page, and then a fetching poem about injustice in an Italian town in the early-mid 19th century. Italian language text. Bound into simple, brown paper-colored boards, title and date affixed neatly to front cover. There are two typed accompanying documents, the first in English, typed on onion-skin: 1) "This wonderful old paper book of 1831 sent as a gift from Gino Sabattini of Bologna, Italy, my bookplate collector of long standing. It is a rare treasure for my collection of cat books and is about a cat who lost his life for stealing a fish. Strange how such a fragile thing, without board covers, could endure for such a length of time. Fairfax, California, September, 1959." 2), the same transcription, older paper, folded twice Bologna 14 Settembre 1959. Savonarole, Jerome [Girolamo Savonarola]
R. Patris F. Hieronymi Savonarolae Ferrariensis Ordinis Praedicatorum de Simplicitate Christianae Vitae Libri Quinque Vere Aurei [Avec: ] Eceens in Lucem Editi Cura R. Patris Fr. Stephani Meney Ord. Praedicatorum
Gratianopoli, Italo, Apud Andream Galle, R. Philippis, 1667. Second Printing. Hardcover. Size: 16mo 6" - 7" tall. Extremely scarce in the trade, there being only a single copy available on-line of the true First Edition, being issued the year prior, and none of the present edition, published in 1667. Latin language throughout. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and still sturdy. 16mo hardcover bound in contemporary leather with four raised bands, gilt ruling, lettering and fleurs-de-lis rubbed, light cracking to upper joints, but still holding firmly. Rubbed and scuffed panels, tips, lightly soiled endpapers, remains there of a former previous owner's bookplate, unobtrusive, lightly wavy text-block, else clean and tightly bound. Fine black-and-white engraved heads, tails and initials throughout. Tiny worm-hole from title page to p. 45. Extensive frontis matter, 2-162 pp. [6] pp. This iteration of the classic works of Savonarola was collected by Etienne Meney (1631-1694), librarian of the Dominican convent. Girolamo Savonarola (21 September 1452 – 23 May 1498) (Jerome Savonarola) was, according to his Wikipedia entry, an "Italian Dominican friar from Ferrara and a preacher active in Renaissance Florence. He became known for his prophecies of civic glory, his advocacy of the destruction of secular art and culture, and his calls for Christian renewal. He denounced clerical corruption, despotic rule, and the exploitation of the poor." The Friar intervened in September of 1494, when King Charles VIII of France invaded Italy and threatened Florence; the ruling Medicis were expelled and, at Savonarola's urging, a new "popular" republic was brought to bear under his enlisting of Florentine youth. Later, he defied a Pope and preached while under a clerical ban and campaigned for reform in the Catholic Church by holding "bonfires of the vanities" and sponsoring pious theatricals. Much mayhem ensued. He was excommunicated by Pope Alexander in May 1497 "and threatened to place Florence under an interdict." A rival Florentine preacher in April 1498 tried to test Savonarola's alleged "divine mandate" but it turned into a fiasco. He lost popular opinion and, alongside two of his supporting friars, were imprisoned. "On 23 May 1498, Church and civil authorities condemned, hanged and burned their bodies in the main square of Florence" (Wikipedia). Schweidler, Abraham; W. Meinhold, ed.; E.A. Friedlaender, translator
The Amber Witch: The Most Interesting Trial for Witchcraft Ever Known
London, George Slater, 1849. . Hardcover. Size: 24mo 5" - 6" tall. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Publisher's original brown cloth, gilt illustration and letter to front cover, spine, moderate rubbing to extremities, blind-stamped decorations to front and rear covers, bumping to spine head and foot, and sunning of cloth at spine to light brown. Translated from the original German of Abraham Schweidler as edited by W. Meinhold, allegedly from a "defective manuscript." This copy is an early reprint of the first English edition, which came out via John Murray in 1844. The foremost authority of supernatural fiction, E.F. Bleiler writes (in The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, 1983) "A minor masterpiece, and still the best novel about witchcraft." The work was originally published in Germany as Maria Schweidler, "die Bernsteinhexe," in 1838; it alleged to be based on an actual 17th-century chronicle that had been edited by the daughter, Mary Meinhold, of the man, Abraham Meinhold, who claimed to have discovered an old, damaged manuscript written by a 17th-century minister, based upon some old papers found in an old church in Koserow, Germany. The fabricated manuscript fooled all the critics and reviewers but became instantly popular. It was written also in "17th-century style," or an approximation thereof, and only years later did the author admit the literary hoax. The story was set during the Thirty Years' War and involved Reverend Abraham Schweidler's near loss of his daughter, Maria, to the ensorceling of a rejected suitor but who accused Maria of herself practicing the Dark Arts. Threatened legally and faced with the likelihood of terrible torture, she confesses, though innocent. A young nobleman rescues her on her way to the stake at which she is to be burned. He loves her, she is innocent, he rescues her. London Quarterly Review noted, "We have read nothing, for a long time, in fiction or in history, which has so completely riveted and anchored our interest, as this little volume. It is worth (we can give no higher praise) of De Foe!" Well, there you go. 262 pp. plus a range of publisher ads.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Fair

Vignajuolo, Enante [Baruffaldi Girolamo]
Grillo Canti Dieci D'Enante Vignajuolo
Venezia, Homobon Bettanino, 1738. Second Edition. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy and lovely of exterior Probably a Second Edition, there having been published another edition close in date to this edition, in Verona, Italy. "Enante Vignajuolo" is the pseudonym for Girolamo Baruffaldi, the Elder (1675-1755). [12], 2-244 pp. Bound in a short octavo format, with a most attractive paste-paper over soft, flexible boards, paper label to spine, with some loss there. Sturdy, tightly bound, rough-cut page edges all-round, and some pencil and pen marks up front previous owners, including from Mr. Robert Allen, a bookseller and appraiser. An allegorical intaglio frontispiece engraved by Francesco Zucchi following an invention by M. Spada and a vignette on the title page, equally allegorical in nature and engraved on copper; right bottom corner torn away and paper-repaired there, with loss of only a single letter. Really lovely intaglio illustrated heads. The previous owner writes that this is "a playful poem aimed at sarcastically lashing out at the medical arts and practitioners. The burlesque production of Girolamo Baruffaldi the Elder (Ferrara, 1675-1755), here adumbrated under the pseudonym of "Enante Vignajuolo." "The work looks back to Plutarch's and Gelli's amusing embellishments of Homer and the colloquy between Ulysses and the hog-man Grillus, who argues that he prefers to remain in his hoggish state, with Circe." Edmund Spenser deals with same in Book II of The Faerie Queen. Baruffaldi "was an Italian historian who wrote a biography of artists active in Ferrara" (Wikipedia), where he was born. He was a student at a Jesuit institute in Novellara and even entered the Jesuit Order (but that in 1773 was suppressed). He became a librarian for the public library then permanent secretary of the Accademia Ariostea; sadly, "he died impoverished."Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . The History of Charles XII King of Sweden
Covent-Garden, London, England, Printed for Alexander Lyon, 1732. Second Edition, Corrected. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. Stated Second Edition, Corrected (the original edition in the original French having been published the year prior), and includes "A New and Correct Map of Sweden," in fold-out, up-front, two-panel and quite fine in clarity and sharpness. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and still pretty sturdy. Bound in a short octavo hardcover format, 7 3/4" x 5" tall and wide, respectively. Joints cracked, stitches showing but holding, tips and edges scuffed, but still stands solidly on its own on the shelf. Fine black-and-white engraving of the 12th King Charles of Sweden at frontis by Vandergucht, and a lovely publisher device opposite, at title page. Original calf binding scaling but intact. Five raised bands to spine, chipping to spine head. Text remarkably free of foxing; interior crisp and white and surprisingly bright. Housed in a custom-made clamshell box, oatmeal sailcloth, with oblong brown leather label affixed neatly to front panel, gilt title stamped there. Contains signature "Chr. Wren Junr. 1737" on front endpaper then also inside front flap and below first signature, all in pen (not yet authenticated signature of the architect's son, who died in 1747). Sir Christopher Wren (30 October 1632 - 8 March 1723), the noted, influential English architect, astronomer, mathematician and physicist, was best known for having conceived and had built St. Paul's Cathedral, but also, according to his Wikipedia entry, "the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and the south front of Hampton Court Palace." He was also the father of the perhaps former owner of the present volume, Christopher Wren, Jr. The Senior Wren's career having been established in full by 1669, he in that year at age 37 married his childhood neighbor, "the 33-year-old Faith Coghill, daughter of Sir John Coghill of Bletchingdon" and who for him bore two children, "Gilbert, born October 1672, who suffered from convulsions and died at about 18 months old, and Christopher, born February 1675. The younger Christopher was trained by his father to be an architect. It was this Christopher that supervised the topping out ceremony of St Paul's in 1710 and wrote the famous Parentalia, or, Memoirs of the family of the Wrens." Were it authentic, the signature here would put him as having been roughly 62 years of age at signing (1675–1747); Christopher Wren, Jr., "of Wroxall Abbey, Warwickshire was a Member of Parliament" (Wikipedia). xi [2], 2-371 pp. All in, an attractive, early edition of an important work, and perhaps with exceeding provenance.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Young, Edward
The Complaint: Or, Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality
London, England, Printed for A. Millar in the Strand and R. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, 1750. . Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. An early reprint of a justifiable classic in English religion and moral philosophy in the form of verse. The title page continues: "To which is added, A Paraphrase on Part of the Book of JOB." The author, Edward Young (1633-1765), was a famous, influential literary light, an English poet, critic and philosopher. This work, published first in 1742, was both financially lucrative for the author and a critical success; it was translated into many different languages including "French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, Welsh, Polish and Magyar" (Hungarian; Wikipedia). The entry for "Young, Edward," in Allibone's Critical Dictionary (1965 Gale reprint) is exceedingly lengthy regarding both his biography and circle of friends and colleagues including James Boswell; the entry notes, for example, that Edmund Burke had committed large portions of the poem to memory (Vol. III, p. 2896). Literary critics note that Night-Thoughts was rehabilitated in the memoirs of soldiers, especially from W.W.I., "as a source of comfort during time in the trenches," according to Blunden (in P. Fussell, The Great War and Modern Memory). So affected was he by a prior reading of Great-Thoughts that the author of Pamela, Samuel Richardson, wrote to the bookseller and publisher A. Millar to discuss publication of a new edition of it, Millar having already purchased the copyright to an expanded version of the book in 1749. Not perhaps a lovely exemplar, but still reasonably sturdy, an eminently readable copy. Bound in a 12mo hardcover format. Measures 4 1/4" x 6 7/8" wide and tall, respectively. Bound wholly in leather, cracking to rear and a bit of the front joint, five raised bands at spine, rubbing to and scuffing of spine, chipping to spine head and foot, upper headband hanging by a thread. Fine bookplate inside front flap, that of F.P. Hodges, penned inscription opposite of William Parry, with no little flourish. Mildly toned and soiled endpapers, another penned inscription at book's final free endpaper, lightly wavy text, else clean and unmarked of interior. The black-and-white engraving at frontis by the engraver Parr is iconic as all get-out. It depicts the poet-philosopher reading ancient texts set atop gravestones in the cemetery outside church at midnight. Complete in one volume, this edition being rare (only one copy found in Worldcat dot org). 326 pp. plus several pages' worth of publisher ads from both A. Millar and R.
