LILLO, GEORGE, The London Merchant or the History of George Barnwell a Tragedy
LILLO, GEORGE
The London Merchant or the History of George Barnwell a Tragedy
Printed for T Lowndes, T Caslon, W Nicoll, T Davies and S Bladon. 1782. Hardcover. Book, 1782, Good Condition, In later binding with marbled paper boards, blue cloth spine and gilt titling to front, 60pp The London Merchant (Or The History Of George Barnwell) is playwright George Lillo's most famous work. A tragedy that follows the downfall of a young apprentice due to his association with a prostitute, it is remarkable for its use of middle and working class characters. First performed at the Drury Lane Theatre on June 21, 1731, The London Merchant became one of the most popular plays of the century George Lillo based his play, The London Merchant, on a seventeenth-century ballad about a murder in Shropshire. The ballad follows the adventures of George Barnwell, who engages in an affair with the prostitute Sarah Millwood. After stealing money from his employer to fund his relationship, Barnwell robs and murders his uncle. Both Barnwell and Millwood are arrested and executed for their crimes. George Lillo's plays usually resembled drames, or mixed toned Bourgeois Tragedies revolving around the middle-class. Good.

WARTON, JOSEPH, An Essay on the Genius and Writings of Pope: 2 Volumes Complete
WARTON, JOSEPH
An Essay on the Genius and Writings of Pope: 2 Volumes Complete
London, R & J Dodsley. 1782. Hardcover. Book, 1782, Good Condition, Rebound Hardcover Red Spine labels with Gilt Title, 8vo, 2 Vols, xiii 415, 423pp Warton's relatively low estimation of Pope was novel (or at least the grounds of his opinion), though within two generations it would become the norm among persons with pretensions to taste, as in Robert Southey's remark that "The age from Dryden to Pope is the worst age of English poetry" His Essay on Pope, though written with such studied moderation that we may, in a hasty reading, regard it almost as a eulogy, was so shocking to the prejudices of the hour that it was received with universal disfavour, and twenty-six years passed before the author had the moral courage to pursue it to a conclusion. Good.
