Oxford, James Parker and Co. 1902. Leather. A collection of historical registers for the diocese of Worcester. Edited for the Worcester Historical Society. Volume I contains the introduction and index, with the first fifty pages of records, whilst volume II contains the rest of the records. Godfrey Giffard (ca. 1235 1302) was Chancellor of the Exchequer of England, Lord Chancellor of England and Bishop of Worcester. By the year 1300 Giffard had become sick and infirm; in March of that year he was visited by Archbishop Winchelsey at Wyke. In 1301, William of Gloucester produced thirty-six articles against him before the Archbishop; although mostly small, technical and legal, they included a charge of manumitting serfs without its consentan another complaint of him unduly favouring his nephews. Both complaints were well investigated, and the Bishop's answers are recorded along with the charges in his register. Complete in two volumes. In half-morocco bindings. Externally sound, though with some rubbing. Hinges strained, with cords visible. One joint starting Internally, firmly bound. Ink inscription and correctional fluid to title page. A lovely prize leather binding of The Pilgrim's Progress, for Lancaster School. The Pilgrim's Progress from the this world to that which is to come, delivered under the similitude of a dream wherein is discovered the manner of his setting out, his dangerous journey and safe arrival at the desired country. The Pilgrim's Progress is a Christian allegory that is regarded as one of the most significant works of theological fiction in English Literature, written by John Bunyan who was an English writer and Puritan preacher. This is a Macmillan reprint. With a previous owner dedication to the front of the volume that states To my dear friend Gesie, from Sidney, March 17, 1987. The Pilgrim's Progress was first published in 1678 and is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. This text comprises of The Pilgrim's Progress and other works by Bunyan. It includes the prefaces and indices as well as an original memoir of the author by George B Cheever. Illustrated, with 31 plates. The plate 'Bunyan's Dream' unfortunately has suffered severe loss. Otherwise, the text is complete. John Bunyan was an English writer and Baptist. In total he wrote nearly sixty titles, most of which were expanded sermons. In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to board edges and spine. Externally, smart with slight rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Small patches of rubbing to the spine, particularly at the head and tail of spine. Rubbing is heavier to the rear board where there are also several marks. Hinges are slightly strained but firm. Gift inscription to recto of front endpaper, Presented to Mr John Watson on his Marriage Day with Best Wishes Peter Coldwell, December 27th 1871. The inscription has a few light felt pen scribbles from another prior owner. Tide mark to bottom of frontispiece due to damp staining. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with instances of spotting throughout, heavier to the plates and to the first and last few pages. Spotting throughout text is mainly to the margins not drastically affecting text. The plate 'Bunyan's Dream' is torn, and lacking a significant portion. Good . Ill.: None. Good .

A detailed account of the old English ecclesiastical festival of Rush-bearing in which rushes are collected and carried to be strewn on the floor of the parish church. The tradition was widespread in Britain from the Middle Ages and dates back to a time when most buildings had earthen floors and rushes were used as a form of renewable floor covering for cleanliness and insulation. The custom had fallen into decline by the beginning of the 19th century, as church floors were flagged with stone, but some villages in the north of England maintain this annual event.
