John Brown's (1722-87) Self-interpreting Bible was originally published in 1778. Originally of Scottish farming stock, Brown was orphaned at twelve and became a shepherd. Having little formal schooling he taught himself Latin, Greek and Hebrew and later became a preacher in the Burgher branch of the Secession church. He wrote a number of books, many of them aimed at young people. This volume contains forty engraved plates. Rebound in cloth with the original spine preserved. Externally, generally smart. There is some wear to the extremities including marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with some brown spotting, including to the plates and the occasional handling mark. There is one page towards the back (St paul's Epistles) which is missing a section of text, although the page has been mended.
