Anonymous
The Apocrypha: Translated out of the Greek and Latin Tongues
New York, Thomas Nelson & Sons, . First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Another fine contribution to the Nelson's Series of books religious and theological in nature, being "the version set forth A.D. 1611 compared with the most ancient authorities and revised A.D. 1894." From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. His penciled notations are left intact. Fine bookplate of Mildred Board affixed inside front flap, but her name is blacked out. Short, black hardcover format, black cloth over bords, still sharp and distinct gilt lettering to front cover, embossed ruling there. Date of publication and author not stated, though it appears to be 1895, and a lengthy, dense Preface provides the fascinating back-story of the process from 1879 to 1895 when these revisions took hold, representing the long work of three different committees of Bible scholars in three centers in England. The Apocrypha are the otherwise sidelined books of the Bible, including here, the Book of Esdras, the Book of Tobit, the Book of Judith, the Book of Esther, the Wisdom of Solomon, the Book of Ecclesiasticus, the Book of Baruch, the Epistle of Jeremiah, the Song of the Three, the Holy Children, the History of Susanna, the Story of Bel and the Dragon, the Prayer of Manasses, and the Book of Maccabees. 376 pp. Double-column texts.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Aristotle
Politics & Poetics
New York, Heritage Press, 1964. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Size: Large 8vo 9" - 10. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound in hardcover format, generally clean, unmarked interior, minimal rubbing to extremities. A justly dubbed classic in Ancient Greece history and culture, politics and poetics, a fine exemplar of Heritage Press production standards and with Sandglass pamphlet laid in. Aristotle's classic work is edited by Benjamin Jowett and S.H. Butcher and with an Horace M. Kallen. Leonard Baskin's fine black-and-white engravings grace the frontis and throughout the text. Twenty-three centuries after its compilation, the Politics, as it's known, still asks central questions. His analysis is based upon 150 different city constitutions and a wide range of political issues to try to establish what's best for men (not women and slaves) and city function. Aristotle believed that city constitutions should be ideal in and of themselves but also serve men's just needs, the ones accorded by man, "a political animal." Brown decorated cloth over boards. 331 pp.tial.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Fine

Bowersock, G.W.
From Gibbon to Auden: Essays on the Classical Tradition
Oxford, England, Oxford University Press, 2009. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A fine and accessible reader in stellar scholarship for several decades; G.W. Bowersock has been one of our leading historians of the classical world, of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Here are collected 17 of his essays, each illustrating how the classical past and the classical tradition have been reflected in leading figures in Modern day, in art, literature, history and politics. Fine-looking, structurally sound hardcover, little discernible wear, bright interior, unmarked. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn. From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. From the publisher blurb, "The essays here range across three centuries, the eighteenth to the twentieth, and are divided chronologically. The great Enlightenment historian Edward Gibbon is in large part the unifying force of this collection as he appears prominently in the first four essays, beginning with Bowersock's engaging introduction to the methods and genius behind The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Gibbon's profound influence is revealed in subsequent essays on Jacob Burckhardt, the nineteenth-century scholar famous for his history of the Italian Renaissance but whose work on late antiquity is only now being fully appreciated; the modern Greek poet Constantine Cavafy, whose annotations on Gibbon's Decline and Fall tell us much about his own historical poems; and finally W. H. Auden, whose poem and little-known essay "The Fall of Rome" were, in quirky ways, tributes to Gibbon." Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. ix [5], 4-240 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Fine/Fine,
