James Fenimore Cooper, The Pilot and the Water Witch, or the Skimmer of the Seas
James Fenimore Cooper
The Pilot and the Water Witch, or the Skimmer of the Seas
London, Colburn and Bentley, 1831-1834. Leather. Two bright early editions of The Pilot and Water Witch by James Fenimore Cooper. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and decoration. Uniformly bound. With a decorative nameplate for Arthur C. Franklin on the front pastedown of each volume. James Fenimore Cooper, 1789 – 1851, was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. He is best remembered as a novelist who wrote numerous sea-stories and the historical novels. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece. In 1826 Cooper moved his family to Europe, having accepted a position with the United States government. While overseas he continued to write. For the rest of his life he continued skirmishing in print, sometimes for the national interest, sometimes for that of the individual, and not infrequently for both at once. This opportunity to make a political confession of faith appears not only to have fortified him in his own convictions, but to have inspired him with the idea of elucidating them for the public through the medium of his art. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and decoration. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild bumping and rubbing. There is an ink signature on the front free-endpapers. Internally the pages are bright with the very occasional spot, that become most prominent on the first and last few pages. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
