Ihr besonderer Charakter rührt daher, dass sie von einem Künstler ohne Rücksicht auf gängige Vorlieben oder ethnologische Systematik zusammengetragen wurde. Wie in seinem eigenen Oeuvre scheut Baselitz weder das Risiko der neuen, ungewohnten Form noch den ästhetischen Bruch. Er konzentriert sich vielmehr als Künstler und Sammler auf die Intensität des jeweiligen Werkes. Die Stoffpuppen, Köpfe und großen Holzfiguren der Bwende/Bembe (Republik Kongo) bilden neben der gewaltigen Werkgruppe der Teke das Herzstück der Sammlung. Darüber hinaus ist Baselitz ein Pionier auf dem Gebiet des Sammelns ostafrikanischer Skulptur. In ihrer Gesamtheit zeigen diese Arbeiten ein überraschend anderes Afrika: Zu sehen sind etwa kniehohe, bunt bemalte Stoffpuppen, die Reliquien eines Verstorbenen enthielten und an die sich die Angehörigen mit ihren Gebeten wenden konnten.
