The second time he attempted to visit Madagascar he was again refused. In 1856 the Queen permitted him a one month stay, which forms a large portion of this work, which was written in celebration from diaries kept during his time there.In this work, Ellis describes these struggles to gain entry to the Madagascar, as well as discussing the history, culture, and royalty of the island.Gift inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper, 'Alfred Mordaunt Egerton, with the best wishes of his sincere friend, Humphrey F. H. B. Herne, on his leaving Eton, Xmas 1859&apos. Egerton was a medalled soldier and courter, and father of the chemist Sir Alfred Charles Glyn Egerton. In a full calf binding. An interesting work detailing William Fitzgerald's travels in British East Africa, and his notes on the agricultural resources and general characteristics. William Walter Augustine Fitzgerald was an Irish traveller, writer, and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. In the late nineteenth century, he spent two years exploring the British East African coastlands, whilst being employed to report on their agricultural capabilities by the Director of the Imperial British East Africa Company. The half title page is present. With a previous seller's small number label to the bottom of the front paste-down. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Spine is faded, and some fading to the edges of the front board. Light marks to the boards and bumping to the spine. Hinges starting but still firm. Paste downs and free endpapers are age-toned. Small label to the lower front paste-down. Internally, binding slightly strained but generally firmly bound. Folding map is torn with only one panel remaining. Francis Galton's brilliant travel account of this time spent exploring the Tropics of South Africa. At the time of this expedition South West Africa was still little explored, with his vivid account filling in the gaps of knowledge relating to the areas between the Cape Colony and the western Portuguese settlements, and towards Lake Ngami. Galton travelled in a party of nearly forty men.Galton was a noted polymath, a proponent on social Darwinism, of whom he was a half-cousin, and a supporter of eugenics.
