Volume V contains numerous plates, many folding, some coloured, and many maps including two large folding to the rear. The supplements contain tables of calendars and readings. Harold Edwin Hurst (1880-1978) was a British hydrologist. Hurst's (1951) study on measuring the long-term storage capacity of reservoirs documented the presence of long-range dependence in hydrology. Much of Hurst's research was motivated by his empirical observations of the Nile. The Hurst exponent, which has been used in other fields, such as finance and cardiology, was named after him. His biography is found in the Hydrological Sciences Bulletin of December 1979. In original half cloth bindings with paper boards. Externally generally sound, although rubbed with some marks. In the publisher's original cloth binding, this work offers an interesting insight into the history of British exploration. First edition. With a frontispiece titled 'Aboriginal Wedding at Fernando Po' and a vignette to the title page. With the previous owner's name stamp of Michael H. O'Neil to the front pastedown and also to the reverse of the frontispiece. Written by Thomas J. Hutchinson the British explorer, surgeon and travel writer of the 19th century. Many of his works relate to his travels in Africa. This particular works presents the author's own observations of numerous tribes from Senegal to Gaboon, collected over 10 years of travel in the continent. Thomas H. Hutchinson defends the work in the preface having been accused to having presented in this volume 'a less favourable portraiture of the African character' than in his other works. He states: 'I shall only advance the plea of never having set forth anything in my description of these people but the naked and unadorned truth as it stood before me&apos. Indeed this work reflects many of the view held by 19th century Europeans on the continent of Africa, whilst offering an insight the history of British exploration. In 1940 she bought Julians Park and redesigned the interior. Her library was impressive, with many examples of her own bookbinding.Audrey was an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty, the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII (though she was also rumoured to be his daughter, or the lover of King Edward VIII), featured in the 'Book of Beauty' by Cecil Beaton. She had many high profile friends, such as Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel, Fred Astaire, and Nancy Mitford, a sparkling hostess of the Edwardian period, her hedonistic antics bringing her into the Bright Young Things. Harry Johnston was a British explorer and colonial administrator, prolific author of travel books on African subjects. He was a key player in the colonisation of most of Africa by seven Western European powers towards the end of the nineteenth century. The present volume is the first edition, first impression of Johnston's report on the scientific expedition of 1884 to Mount Kilimanjaro. He was appointed leader of the expedition by the British Association. With sketches of the natural history of Easter Equatorial Africa, as well as of the languages and economy of the area. During the expedition, he concluded treaties with local chiefs, which were then transferred to the British East Africa Company. Illustrated with a frontispiece, six maps, of which two folding in colour, and one full page in colour, fourteen full page plates and numerous other figures in text by the author. Collated, complete. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (1902-1968). Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. Her passion for literature is displayed by her impressive library.She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonist, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things&apos.  In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping and chipping to the tail of the spine and extremities, some loss to the head of the spine.
