DURANT, WILL
Abolish the Death Penalty!
New York, League to Abolish Capital Punishment, 1927. First edition in pamphlet form (originally published in the New York Telegram), n. d. (1927); 11 x 8 1/2; pp. [4]; off-white stock, printed and ruled in black; somewhat fragile, with intersecting fold lines and a few small, closed cuts to edges; inconspicious, barely visible repair to gutter of pp. 2-3; faint stamp of the California Branch (of the League to Abolish Capital Punishment) to pp. 1; overall in about very good- condition. William James ("Will") Durant (1885 - 1981) was a historian, writer, and philosopher, remembered for his influential, multi-volume "The Story of Civilization," co-authored with his wife - writer Ariel Durant (for which they would win the Pulitzer Prize), and for his "The Story of Philosophy" (1926), - considered a groundbreaking work, which popularized philosophy. The American League to Abolish Capital Punishment was founded in 1927 as part of a wide-spread, anti-death penalty movement. Durant's article, first written for the New York Telegram and reprinted here for free distribution, included his views on "The Quality of Mercy," "Will Abolition Increase Crime," "Three Stages in the History of Punishment," and so on. OCLC lists one copy at Northwestern; none other in the trade (as of Fall 2020). Very good .
