Dodo Press, 2009. Paperback. Pp: 220. Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) was an English philosopher, remembered today for his work on political philosophy. His 1651 book Leviathan established the foundation for most of Western political philosophy from the perspective of social contract theory. He also contributed to a diverse array of fields, including history, geometry, physics of gases, theology, ethics, general philosophy, and political science. He was one of the main philosophers who founded materialism. He visited Florence in 1636 and later was a regular debater in philosophic groups in Paris, held together by Marin Mersenne. Hobbes's first area of study was an interest in the physical doctrine of motion and physical momentum. Despite his interest in this phenomenon, he disdained experimental work as in physics. He built a good reputation in philosophic circles and in 1645, he was chosen with Descartes, Gilles de Roberval and others, to referee the controversy between John Pell and Longomontanus over the problem of squaring the circle. Zo heeft de behoefte aan een politieke theorie in het Nederland van de republiek der Zeven Provinciën geleid tot de eerste vertaling in onze taal, in 1667. De vragen die Hobbes stelt, naar de verhouding tussen staat en burger, tussen geweld, macht en gezag, en naar de grenzen van de macht van de overheid, zijn actueler dan ooit. Niet voor niets maakt dit klassieke werk in de laatste decennia een revival door. In Leviathan beschrijft Hobbes een staat waarin de politieke machten elkaar in evenwicht houden en aldus de vrede in de samenleving bewaren. Von 1603 bis 1608 absolviert er ein Studium an der puritanischen Magdalen Hall in Oxford, das noch stark durch die aristotelische Schulphilosophie geprägt ist. Danach tritt er in den Dienst der Familie Cavendish, einer der reichsten und einflussreichsten Adelsfamilien Englands, der er über drei Generationen als Tutor und freundschaftlicher Begleiter, Berater und Privatsekretär verbunden bleiben wird. Diese Anstellung erlaubt es ihm, umfangreiche Studien auf zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Gebieten zu betreiben sowie auf Reisen Bekanntschaft mit den bedeutendsten Gelehrten seiner Zeit zu machen, u.a. mit Galilei und Descartes. Während des englischen Bürgerkriegs lebt Hobbes in Paris, wo auch seine ersten wichtigen philosophischen Schriften (v.a. De Cive , 1642) entstehen. Sein Hauptwerk, der Leviathan , erscheint dann 1651 in London. Im Leviathan argumentiert Hobbes sowohl für den Absolutismus wie auch für den Liberalismus, was ihm schnell und nachträglich die Feindschaft aller Lager einbringt. Am 4. Dezember 1679 stirbt er auf Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire. Heute zählt Hobbes mit Platon, Locke oder Kant zu den bedeutendsten politischen Philosophen überhaupt. Ainsi complets, ces exemplaires ont une certaine valeur. "La seconde édition ... a l'avantage de contenir à la suite du texte un "avertissement du traducteur ajouté après la publication de l'ouvrage", pièce de 13 pp. (en réalité 16 pp.) qui n'est pas dans l'édition précédente." Cette pièce a été reliée en fin de notre exemplaire qui est ainsi l'exemplaire de L'EDITION ORIGINALE LE PLUS COMPLET que l'on puisse souhaiter.Ex-libris gravé aux armes du Marquis de Monteynard (Dauphiné).Bel exemplaire dans une reliure en bon état. La marge supérieure du titre a été rognée, sans atteinte au texte, probablement pour enlever une marque de propriété ; autre particularité, les feuilles de papier utilisées pour l'impression avaient été mouillées avant celle-ci, nous avons donc une auréole très claire en tête des quatre ff. centraux de chaque cahier.

Thomas Hobbes was one of the founders of modern political philosophy. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. Hobbes was a champion of absolutism for the sovereign but he also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. Two works bound as one. First volume dated from COPAC using pagination and publisher. Preface present from the 1646 edition. Featuring an engraved title page, decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals. In contemporary calf binding. Externally, rubbed with wear to the extremities and spine. Slight loss to the tail of the spine and rear hinge is very slightly starting. Internally, generally firmly bound, although with the odd leaf working slightly loose.
