GRAY, THOMAS; PARNELL, THOMAS; COLLINS, WILLIAM; GREEN, MATTHEW; WARTON, THOMAS; FOSTER, BIRKET [ILLUS]; WILLMOTT, ROBERT ARIS [ED.]
The Poetical Works of Thomas Gray, Thomas Parnell, William Collins, Matthew Green and Thomas Warton. Five Books in One Volume
London: George Routledge & Co, 1854. Reprint. Red hardback morrocco leather cover. 170mm x 120mm (7" x 5"). 128pp, 108pp, 91pp, 44pp, 190pp. B/w plates by Birket Foster and E Corbould. Binding by R R Balfour, High Street, Montrose. Gauffering, or goffering as it is also known, is likely as old as the process of edge-gilding. In its simplest form, gauffering involved impressing a pattern into the edges of a book, after they had been gilded, with warm finishing tools or rolls. Presumably due to the work involved, it was not a common form of decoration and by the mid-1600s the practice had mostly died out. The 19th century saw its resurgence, however, with numerous ornate and religious bindings sporting a variety of lace-like repeating patterns.. VG : in very good condition without dust jacket as issued. Marbled endpapers and gauffered gilt edges. Bookplate to front pastedown .
