Augustin Thierry
Histoire de la Conquete de L&Apos;Angleterre Par Les Normands: De Ses Causes Et de Ses Suites Jusqu&Apos;a Nos Jours En Angleterre, En Ecosse, En Irlande Et Sur le Continent
Paris, Furne et Cie. 1860. Leather. Augustin Thierry's complete history of the conquest of England by the Normans in the eleventh century. Augustin Thierry's complete history of the conquest of England by the Normans in the eleventh century. In French. With an engraved frontispiece of Thierry to volume I. Tenth edition, revised and corrected. Thierry's main ideas on the Germanic invasions, the Norman Conquest, the formation of the Communes, the gradual ascent of the nations towards free government and parliamentary institutions, are set forth in the articles he contributed to the Censeur europen (181720), and later in his Lettres sur l'histoire de France (1820). From Claude Charles Fauriel he learned to use primary sources; and by the aid of the Latin chronicles and the collection of Anglo-Saxon laws, he wrote Histoire de la Conqute de l'Angleterre par les Normands (History of the Conquest of England by the Normans), the appearance of which was greeted with great enthusiasm (1825). It was written in a style at once precise and picturesque, and was dominated by a theory of Anglo-Saxon liberty resisting the invasions of northern barbarians, and eventually reviving in the parliamentary monarchy. Complete in four volumes. In half-calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, though with some slight rubbing. 1 joint starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, though with some instances of foxing (heavier to the first and last few pages, as usual), and the occasional pencil annotation. Very Good . Ill.: Not stated. Very Good .
