A wonderful first edition set from the celebrated Scottish novelist and poet.Consisting of the two volume first series, published in 1827 and consisting of the three tales 'Chrystal Croftangry's Narrative', 'The Highland Widow', 'The Two Drovers', and 'The Surgeon's Daughter&apos. And the three volume second series published in 1828, and containing 'St Valentine's Day, or, The Fair Maid of Perth&apos.With each volume retaining the original half title.Part of Scott's 'Waverley' series, this work was highly regarded by contemporary readers.With publisher's catalogues to the rear of volume II of the first series, dated October 1827, and to the rear of volume III of the second series. In quarter morocco bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, excellent, with light fading to back strips. Otherwise, lovely. Internally, firmly bound. This biographical account focuses upon the downfall of Napoleon, detailing his escape from Elba, the Battle of Waterloo, his captivity in St Helena, and his eventual death. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, as well as a poet, playwright, and historian. Many of his works are classics of European and Scottish literature, such as 'Ivanhoe' and 'Waverley&apos.  He wrote this work in the later part of his life.Two pages of publisher's adverts to the front of text. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Cloth is very bright, with a few marks to boards and a bit of fading to spine. Minimal edge wear to extremities and head and tail of spine. Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
