The first edition, first issue of Sir Walter Scott's collection of short stories taking place in the Scottish Highlands, 'Chronicles of Canongate&apos. These two volumes comprise the first series of 'Chronicles' which contain four stories total: 'Chrystal Croftangry's Narrative', 'The Highland Widow', 'The Two Drovers', and 'The Surgeon's Daughter&apos. The first edition, first issue of this work, with the publisher's adverts dated October 1827. To the title page it is stated that this work is written by 'The author of 'Waverley'' which is known to be Sir Walter Scott. The first few novels from the Waverley series were printed anonymously. Scott publicly acknowledged his authorship of these works in 1827 with this work, with his name stated to the end of the introduction.  Complete in two volumes, bound with the half-titles in the original boards. With eight pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume II. In the publisher's original paper covered boards. Externally, shelf wear and light staining the boards. Bumping to the extremities. Significant loss to the binding on the spines, leaving collections of leaves exposed. Bookplate of H.J. Tolcher to the front pastedown of Volume II. Internally, hinges are held by cords and binding is very loose. Instances of light spotting to some pages. Fair . Ill.: Not Stated. Fair .
