 Sir Walter Scott, Halidon Hill
Sir Walter Scott
Halidon Hill
Edinburgh, Archibald Constable & Co. 1822. First edition. Paperback. A first edition copy of Walter Scott's lesser-known 'dramatic sketch', in the original paper wraps and contained within a quarter-morocco slipcase. First Edition. Original paper wraps, loosely contained in modern cardboard wraps and a contemporary quarter-leather slipcase. This is a 'dramatic sketch' by Sir Walter Scott, which retells the reconciliation between two Scottish chiefs before a final battle against Edward III. Characters include the Regent of Scotland, various Scottish Chiefs and Nobles, a Knight Templar, and the Abbot of Walthamstow.  This work was originally written 'with the purpose of contributing to a miscellany projected by a much esteemed friend', before it became too long for the publication. Though classified as a drama, 'Halidon Hill' is intended to 'illustrate military antiquities, and the manners of chivalry', and not 'designed or calculated' for the stage.Sixteen pages of publisher's adverts to the front of text. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original paper wraps, loosely placed in modern cardboard wraps and contained in a contemporary quarter-leather slipcase. Externally, smart. Minimal edge wear to the extremities of wraps, with a bit of loss to the head and tail of spine. Light discolouration to wraps. Paper endpapers adhered to paste downs. Slipcase is smart, with minimal edge wear and light rubbing and wear to the spine, particularly the bands of joints. A few marks to marbled boards of slipcase. Slipcase is beginning to detach at the top edge, and is being held together at the leather spine binding. Internally, firmly bound, with binding loosening towards middle. A few light spots throughout text, particularly to the margins. Most pages are unopened to the top of fly leaves. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
