Kern's real scientific value lies in his philological studies, his polyglottism was overwhelming and of unsurpassed knowledge. Not only Indo-european languages became subject ot his studies and publications. He became the founder of the epigraphy of Cambodia, being the first to decipher the inscriptions of the country in 1879. At Leiden Kern also became the founder of Austronesian language-studies, beginning to open the scientific knowledge of Kawi, or old Javanese. This set contains his scattered scientific essays on philology, epigraphy, indo-european and austronesian languages. Vol. XV also contains a number of biographical notices of a.o.
