BUCHANAN, JAMES, Assembling of Troops in Washington City. Message from the President of the United States, in Answer to a Resolution of the House Calling for Information in Regard to the Assembling of Troops in the City of Washington
BUCHANAN, JAMES
Assembling of Troops in Washington City. Message from the President of the United States, in Answer to a Resolution of the House Calling for Information in Regard to the Assembling of Troops in the City of Washington
[Washington, D.C.], 1861. First edition. Removed. [1 leaf]. 8vo. House of Representatives. 36th Congress, 2d session. Ex. Doc. No. 82. Provides Buchanan's rationale for ordering troops into Washington with the approaching inauguration of Lincoln: "But what was the duty of the President at the time the troops were ordered to this city? Ought he to have waited, before this precautionary measure was adopted, until he could obtain proof that a secret conspiracy existed to seize the capital? In the language of the select committee, this was 'in a time of high excitement consequent upon revolutionary events transpiring all around us, the very air filled with rumors, and individuals indulging in the most extravagant expressions of fears and threats.' Under these and other circumstances, which I need not detail, but which appear in the testimony before the select committee, I was convinced that I ought to act.. At the present moment, when all is quiet, it is difficult to realize the state of alarm which prevailed when the troops were first ordered to this city. This almost instantly subsided after the arrival of the first company, and a feeling of comparative peace and security has since existed both in Washington and throughout the country. Had I refused to adopt this precautionary measure, and evil consequences, which many good men at the time apprehended, had followed, I should never have forgiven myself. A very good copy with two small tears on the fore edge.

REPUBLICAN PARTY. (BUCHANAN, JAMES), Col. Fremont's Private and Public Character Vindicated by James Buchanan
REPUBLICAN PARTY. (BUCHANAN, JAMES)
Col. Fremont's Private and Public Character Vindicated by James Buchanan
New York, Young Men's Fremont and Dayton Central Union, John W. Oliver, 1856. First edition. Removed. 4 pp. 8vo. Consists of introductory text supporting Fremont against the attacks of the Washington Union questioning Fremont's background, followed by a transcripts of Buchanan's deposition in the case brought against Fremont in the Court of Exchequer in 1852, headed: "Who conquered California? Important testimony of Hon. James Buchanan of Pennsylvania in the Exchequer.--Gibbs v. Fremont." In this abusive campaign, Fremont was attacked for his illegitimate birth, his supposed Roman Catholicism, and by the Washington Union at the heart of his fame, his exploits in "conquering" California (shades of the 2004 attack on John Kerry's war record). The refutation is provided in Bucanan's own words, his disposition in which he declared "in my opinion [Fremont] is better entitled to be called the conqueror of California than any other man." OCLC and RLIN show 5 copies. A good copy, leaves separated, with residue from removal and a few small tears just affecting a few letters on the second leaf.

[BUCHANAN, JAMES] GRAYDON, WILLIAM
Forms of Conveyancing; and of Practice, in Various Courts, and Public Offices. Volume II (Only) of Two Volumes
Harrisburgh, PA, John Wyeth, 1811. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo (5" x 8-1/4") bound in contemporary calf leather recently rebacked retaining the original spine and gilt-stamped burgundy morocco spine label. The second volume of two, but this copy belonged to President James Buchanan and is SIGNED by him, clearly and darkly, on top of the title page. Books signed by Buchanan are hard to come by. Light to moderate foxing throughout. Very Good Buchanan is the only president from Pennsylvania and the only president who remained a lifelong bachelor. Much speculation has been made about Buchanan's sexual orientation based largely on his close and intimate relationship with William Rufus King (who became Vice President under Franklin Pierce). The two men lived together for 13 years from 1840 until King's death in 1853. They attended events together and were both said to have "effeminate" manners. Contemporaries noted their close connection. Andrew Jackson dubbed them "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy." The two men's nieces destroyed most of their uncles' correspondence after their deaths.
