HUGO, Victor.
Bug-Jargal.
Paris, J. Hetzel & Cie, 1876.8vo. Original illustrated wrappers (spine dam.). With 22 woodengravings after Beaucé et Riou by Pannemaker. 84 pp.First published in Paris in 1826. - The story of Bug-Jargal, the mystical leader of the slaves, begins several weeks before the Haitian Revolution, when Toussaint Louverture fights the colonial regime. D'Auverney, the nephew of a landed aristocrat with many slaves, is betrothed to Marie, his cousin. A slave, Pierrot, falls in love with Marie, but can not do anything because of the obvious racial and cultural barriers between them. The novel follows the tumultuous early years of the Haitian Revolution. It is one of the most important works of nineteenth-century colonial fiction, and quite possibly the most sustained novelistic treatment of the Haitian Revolution by a major European author. - (Stained).Cf. Sabin 33613-33615.

Victor Hugo
Bug-Jargal; le Dernier Jour D&Apos;Un Condamnãƒâ©; Claude Gueux
Paris , Nelson, Editeurs , [1912]. Leather. Three fictional works by the famous author Victor Hugo in the original French, in a smart prize binding. This edition comprises three mid-nineteenth century stories by Victor Hugo in the original French. Dated from Jisc 1912. Bug-Jargal follows a friendship between enslaved African prince and a French military officer during the Haitian Revolution. Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné constitutes a political plea for the abolition of death penalty. Claude Gueux is a short story, considered to be an early example of 'true crime' fiction. Sharing Hugo's thoughts on injustice, which are explored later in more depth in Les Miserables. It was considered a great educational work, so much so that the editor of Revue de Paris arranged for copies to be sent to all deputies of France. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece. With half titles to each story. In a smart full calf prize binding, second prize awarded to C L H Tolley in 1914 for Classics.  In a full calf school prize binding, with new marbled endpapers. Externally generally smart with minor shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the boards and spine. The front hinges are slightly strained, holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. With a light foxing affecting the endpapers slightly, otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
