Barthold Georg Niebuhr, The Life and Letters of Barthold George Niebuhr, with Essays on His Character and Influence
Barthold Georg Niebuhr
The Life and Letters of Barthold George Niebuhr, with Essays on His Character and Influence
London, Chapman and Hall , 1852. First edition. Cloth. The first edition life and letters of Barthold Georg Niebuhr, the Danish-German statesman and historian. Bound in the original cloth. The first edition. In two volumes. Lacking the supplementary volume. Uniformly bound in the publisher's original full embossed cloth. The life and letters of Barthold Georg Niebuhr, with essays on his character and influence by the Chevalier Bunsen, and Professor Brandis and Loebell. Barthold Georg Niebuhr (1776 - 1831) was a Danish-German statesman and historian who became Germany's leading historian of Ancient Rome and a founding father of modern scholarly historiography. By 1810 Niebuhr was inspiring German patriotism in students at the University of Berlin by his analysis of Roman economics and government. Historians generally view Niebuhr as a leader of the Romantic Era and symbol of German national spirit that emerged after the defeat at Jena. But he was also deeply rooted in the classical spirit of the Age of Enlightenment, his use of philologic analysis, and his emphasis on both general and particular phenomena in history. The half title pages are present in each volume. With the previous owner's initials to the half title page of volume one. Uniformly bound in the publisher's original cloth. Externally smart with some shelf wear to the extremities. Crack to the rear joint of volume one. Bumping to the spines. Loss and fraying to the upper spine of volume one. Marks to the boards. Hinges strained. Ink mark to the front paste-down of volume one. Handling marks and scattered spots to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Offsetting to the front paste-down of volume one. Internally, binding strained but still firm. Pages lightly age-toned but generally bright and clean. Ink initials to the half title page of volume one. Light spotting to the front and rear.
