Thiers lebte ab 1821 in Paris und schloss sich dort liberalen Kreisen an. Talleyrand wurde sein Förderer. Schnell stieg Thiers zum wichtigsten Journalisten des Constitutionnel auf, des wichtigsten Blattes der liberalen Bewegung. Später wurde er Mitbegründer der radikaleren liberalen Zeitung Le National, die eine konstitutionelle Monarchie forderte und damit zum Sprachrohr der Julirevolution 1830 wurde. Mit der Veröffentlichung von Thiers’ Geschichte der französischen Staatsumwälzung (Histoire de la Révolution française) (1823 bis 1827) begann allgemein eine neue, positivere Sichtweise der französischen Revolution; Thiers war vor allem ein Bewunderer Napoleons. A five volume set of this French language historical work by Adolphe Thiers, in decorative leather bindings A five volume set of this French language historical work by Adolphe Thiers, in decorative leather bindings. Of a complete set of six volumes, volume two is absent. Thiers was a noted French politician and historian of the French Revolution, who would come to prominence as a vocal opponent of Emperor Napoleon III, who would reign from 1848-1871. As a prime minister who served several terms, Thiers was particularly noteworthy for his brutal treatment of revolutionaries during the Paris Commune of 1871, where he killed thousands. As such, even amongst monarchist and reactionary sections of the French intellegensia of the era, his historical work is often deemed unreliable and biased, with obvious preferences toward the establishment which he initially rejected as a republican. Thus a polarising figure, Karl Marx would describe Thiers as a "monstrous gnome" , "consistent only in his greed for wealth and his hatred for the men that produce it". Nonetheless, the works here are particularly detailed and thorough, making for an interesting insight into the political turbulence of the era, and with several plates throughout. Each volume contains the bookbinders' label of C.H. Debonnaire, of Brussels. In decorative morocco bindings with gilt detailing. Externally, there is prominent wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrip, as well as rubbing and very significant sunning to the boards of two volumes. There is also minor strain to the hinges of several volumes. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound and largely bright and clean, although there are instances of spotting and minor foxing throughout. Good Only . Ill.: Not Stated. Good Only .
