An illustrated set of The Novels and Works of Jane Austen, edited by R. W. Chapman. Chapman was a British scholar, book collector, and editor of the works of Samuel Johnson and Jane Austin. This set includes four out of the five volume set being 'The Novels', and the additional sixth volume being 'Minor Works&apos. It is missing Volume II of the original five volume set. The third edition, later impressions of the original five volume set, and 'Minor Works' is a reprint.Volume I, Sense and Sensibility (1953), Volume III, Mansfield Park (1953), Volume IV, Emma (1960), Volume V, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion (1980), and Volume VI, Minor Works (1963).With many illustrations throughout from contemporary sources. In the original publisher's cloth bindings. Externally, very smart. There is some slight bumping to the heads and tails of the spines. The spines of Volume I and III are slightly faded. There are some light marks to the boards and light spotting to the fore edges. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the very occasional spot. Very Good Indeed . Five novels by Jane Austen, the beautiful Oxford large paper edition limited to one-thousand sets, of which nine-hundred and fifty for sale. The text based on the collation of the early editions by R. W. Chapman. Complete in five volumes in the original uniform quarter cloth over marbled boards bindings. Spare spine labels tipped in to rear as called for. Comprising popular novels Sense and Sensibility; Pride and Prejudice; Mansfield Park; Emma; Northanger Abbey and Persuasion (in one). These titles among the publications that gained Austen modest success in her lifetime, for which she received little famed as published anonymously. Georgian novelist Jane Austen was known for her interpretations, comments, and critique of the British landed gentry of the time. Her plots are known for exploring the dependence of women on marriage in the favour of social and economic security.Illustrated with beautiful chromo-collotype frontispieces and thirty-seven further full page plates some folding, as well as illustrations in text. Collated, complete. The frontispiece to Mansfield Park has an image of the same location, Harleston Park, tipped in on top, which can be pulled back to reveal a different image of the building.  Featuring uniform edition title pages as well as original title pages, with notes on the modern edition printed to verso of the original title page. Notes, indexes, and illustrations from contemporary sources. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding over marbled boards, title label to spine. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, minor bumping to head and tail of spine, rubbed and lightly chipped with only minimal loss to spine title label of 'Emma,' back strip and labels lightly darkened. Neat previous ownership inscription to front free endpaper 'Rosamond Wontage' dated 1924. Internally, firmly bound.
