[APPIAN OF ALEXANDRIA].
Appian alexandrini romanarum historiarum libri, gr., ex Bibliotheca Regia.ÊLutetia [Paris] Caroli Stephani, 1551.
Princeps editio of Appian’s celebrated Roman History.  Praised through the centuries as an invaluable source of information about Roman History and especially the Civil War years, Appian’s works gives a detailed account of its various peoples and regions, from the earliest times down to their incorporation into the Empire. The ethnographic structure of this work is of special interest: Appian most likely used this structure to facilitate his readers' orientation through the sequence of events which occur in different places and are united only by their relationship to Rome. Although five out 28 chapters of the Roman History were printed in Venice during the 1470s, all bibliographical references agree on the fact that this first complete issue is to be considered as the true Princeps Editio. Started by Robert Estienne, this edition was completed and printed by his younger brother Charles. For the first time in a classical text, all three sizes of Claude Garamond's famous «Grecs du Roi» typeface were used here.  Fine copy, in contemporary binding. Two small library stamps on the title and first page of text, minor restoration work to the last two leaves affecting a few words of text, yet a very good interior condition, clean and crisp, with large margins. Brunet I, 356: «PremiŤre ťdition, belle et rare». Schreiber, 126; Editio Princeps... generally cited to be the supreme example of the use of the Royal Greek types». Updike, Printing Types I, 23-8 : «one of the most exquisite books»;  «The type in mass, and the proportion and imposition of the type-page, are very splendid»;  «The superb decorations and initials by Tory are wonderful, in their accord with the colour of the Greek text, in their printable qualities and in their grace of design». See also: Adams A-1340; Graesse I, 168.

APPIANO ALEXANDRINO (APPIAN OF ALEXANDRIA)

Florence, Italy, Heredi di Philipp di Giunta, 1526. Second Edition. Leather-bound (Vellum). Thick 8vo. 16.50 cm. x 10 cm. Bound in full vellum, with contrasting spine label lettered in gilt ("Appiana Ed De Giunti"). Seven gilt chain bars to spine, with large initials "F.M." to last compartment. Tiny worm-holes to both front and rear joints, front pastedown, and last few leaves and rear pastedown. Light staining with tideline to first 14 leaves. Translation: OF THE ROMAN CIVIL WARS, TRANSLATED BY ALEXANDRO BRACCESE OF FLORENCE, AGAIN WITH GREAT DILIGENCE, by Alexandro Braccese of Florence. Half-title with the printer's device of ".. the famous Florentine House of Giunta. The device consists of a fleur-de-lis (Florentine Lily), supported by two putti (chubby male figures often seen in classical sculpture) beneath whom carved into the plinth, is to be found the printer's motto Nil Candidius, or None More Brilliant. Numerous pages show manuscript marginalia, quite possibly in a contemporary hand. Probably the second edition of the 1519 edition (see Renouard 92) 287 leaves OCLC 13405915. Appianus Alexandrinus; c. 95†- c. AD 165) was a Greek historian with Roman citizenship who flourished during the reigns of Emperors of Rome Trajan, Hadrian, and Antoninus Pius. He was born c. 95 in Alexandria. The Giunta device features the Florentine lily, or fleur-de-lis, supported by two putti. A larger version of their device also appears more traditionally on the final leaf of both volumes and contains their motto "nil candidius" ("none more brilliant"). Appianus Alexandrinus born in Alexandria, Egypt in A.D. 95, who died in A.D. 165) was a Greek historian with Roman citizenship, whose principal creative work was his Historia Romana (Roman History) a series of 24 books consisting of episodic monographs which provide invaluable histories and daily lives of different cultures and inhabitants up to their incorporation into the Roman Empire. The sections covering the Roman Civil Wars consists of five of those books (13 through 17), and are in this volume numbered 1 through 5 (Primo, Secondo,Terzo, Quarto & Quinto). Appian's books describing Roman History are the only extant comprehensive description of these momentous decades of Roman history, and the first edition of this (1519) is the first to be translated into a modern language (Italian). Very Good .
