Unbound as issued. 17 watercolors including sixteen out of text by Surédia, engraved on wood by Robert Dill, and decorated by the artist with black and gold banners, initials, motifs and tailpieces. Enclosed in gilt and black tooled cream wrapps. Accompanied by a suite of plates [see note]. enclosed in gilt tooled lilac wrapps., together enclosed in split card case within card slipcase as issued (some browning and split to tail). ¶ No. 47 of a Limited edition of 75 copies accompanied by a suite in colour on chine of the 17 compositions, a suite on japon in black and gold of the 36 headers and tailpieces, 11 further plates, of 490 numbered copies in total. His orientalist romance, Un jardin sur l'Oronte (A Garden on the Orontes)—which would be the basis of an opera of the same name—was first published in 1922, triggering what would be called la querelle de l'Oronte (the Orontes Quarrel). Devout and sincere Catholics were shocked by the complacent, skilful, sometimes enchanting ways of Barrès in mixing the sacred and the profane. His heroine [Oriante] was both pagan and irresistible.
