Browne, W.G. - TRAVELS IN AFRICA, EGYPT, AND SYRIA, From the Year 1792 to 1798.

T. Cadell ..., 1799. 1st Ed. 4to. xxxviii + 496pp. [Lacking frontis.], 2 folding maps (with tears at hinges), plan. Some light browning, upto pp.100 and pp.420 onwards with light waterstain to leading corner, with the signatures of E.W. Johnson, Pauline Webb and another, ex.-libris Thomas Allnutt, contemporary marbled boards, some surface wear and soiling, rebacked and recornered in speckled calf, gilt ruling and gilt lettered label to spine. ¶ William George Browne (1768–1813). Brown, who contributed important information on the course of the Nile, underwent considerable hardships whilst accompanying the Soudan caravan to Darfur, a country not previously visited by Europeans. The book was received unfavourably due partly to the author's unimaginative though accurate style, but chiefly to his claim that Eastern manners and customs excelled over those in Europe at that time.
