Bollaert together with George Smith, are thought to be the first Europeans to have made the crossing of the desert of Atacama, duing his first visit to Peru in 1825. ODNB ‘... During 1853–4 he was again travelling in South America, having been commissioned to undertake further explorations for nitrate minerals in Peru and coal deposits in Chile. In 1859 he was associated with the Ecuador Land Company, a colonization scheme that planned to combine settlement with scientific exploration.
