Large engraved armorial bookplate laid down to one panel: William Smith Nicholson, Christ Church, Oxford". Each book measures 5.75" x 3.75" x 1.5". Ruby 24's. Polished black calf with gilt titles. Each board with brass edging and central brass clasp (in full working order), Each spine with 5 raised bands and gilt titles. All page edges bright gilt. Clean yellow endpapers. Binder's blind-stamp to each front endpaper: "Masters, 78 Bond St.". Dedication to each front free-endpaper: "George Harvey Nicholson. From His God-father H. F. N. - Feb. 22. 1863." Clean text throughout, except for two verses blocked in blue biro (I. Corinthians XVI. Verse 13-14 ). Brother of George Harvey Nicholson, Mary (Nicholson) Balguy, Stuart Nicholson CB MVO DL, Maud Nicholson, Edith (Nicholson) Meade and Agnes (Nicholson) Lewes-D'Ashwood. Husband of Blanche Wilhelmina Dorothea (Annesley) Nicholson — married 1 Jun 1892 in Bareilly, Bengal, India. Father of Geoffrey Nicholson. Died 13 Jun 1942 at age 79 in Winchester, Hampshire, England . He was educated at Mr Ratcliffe's School at 42 Sandgate Rd, Folkestone and later at Sandhurst Military Academy. By 1887 he was serving in India as a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion The Hampshire Regiment. He married Blanche Dorothea Annesley at Bareilly, Bengal on 1 June 1892. By 1901 he was serving in Ireland. On 14 January 1916 he was gazetted temporary Brigadier General. A photograph from 1917 is available in the National Portrait Gallery. **** H.F.N. is believed to be Henry Frederick Nicholson born on 24 October 1835, brother of William Smith Nicholson and a Navy Captain.
